3.25 BIOS fails (error 331) intel 11th gen external case no battery

Was able to upgrade to 3.24 but now stuck

Running Ubuntu 26.04.x, external case so no battery. Tried 2 USB drives (USB2 8GB and USB3 32GB) both GPT + FAT32, tried all four ports, fresh linux formatted. Followed instructions here: Framework Laptop 13 11th Gen Intel® Core™ — BIOS 3.25 | Resources

Initial load generates error 331. Added suggested flag to script, FW appears to update, machine reboots to EFI linux boot loader. However checking in BIOS it seems maybe partial update has occurred per update versions listed in the instructions link above?

Never got PD update screens nor the BIOS capsule update screen. Have a solid hour into this, following the similar process to update to 3.24, but 3.25 won’t take.

Unfortunately, this is called out as a known issue in all of the updates after v3.20:

“Updating a Mainboard outside of a laptop

This release supports standalone updates without a battery attached only when updating using the EFI shell method only. After rebooting, please follow the onscreen instructions to update your BIOS when in standalone mode, which will require moving the power source between both sides of the Mainboard to allow PD firmware to update correctly.

Please note that the power and display output must be connected to the same side during standalone updates. Failure to do this may result in no display output during the update process.

We recommend the following update flow for standalone updates:”

Even so. That list of steps has been present on every update since they added standalone support, but the “known issue” is newer than that.
