7700s lock ups?

Hi All,

Anybody run into glitchyness and GPU freezing lately with a 7700s? I’ve been playing some games on my FW 16, running Gentoo, trying to smooth out some of those brain wrinkles with dopaminergic indulgences. Megabonk specifically seems to cause these graphics lockups. Happened to me on two different minor kernel versions.

It locked up the screen at one point a couple days ago, so I ssh’d in and killed various programs before shutting the laptop down. When it came back up, I could see the frozen game screen faintly on top of dark backgrounds including the UEFI and the console (I boot to a terminal not to one of those login managers). It wasn’t burn-in. But somehow the game image was retained and was still being faintly rendered.

Last night, I repeatedly got freezing, but if I was quick to press the power button (which I have set to sleep the screen), when I’d wake the screen back up, the graphics stack would recover. It’d wake up, still be frozen, kind of stutter and reset and then be back to normal for some period.

I don’t know if this is a recent driver bug or somebody vibe coding or maybe a thermal issue of some kind? It doesn’t seem to happen with less demanding games. Maybe it’s some bug that only shows up at high frame rates.

It’s all too weird, so I thought maybe it’d mean something to somebody.

I was never able to reproduce this except with Megabonk, and the issue stopped happening after I changed the Proton version down to 9. So my money’s on… very strange driver bug, maybe, plus some Proton incompatibility with that specific game.

Rebooting and seeing that game image on top of UEFI text was pretty cool though.
