Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, I didn’t see any place to post about the mouse part of the Framework 16 laptop deck.
I’ve been talking with someone who is attempting a project I asked about a long time ago to add a drawing tablet to the lower part of the laptop deck, next to the trackpad. My current thought for the implementation is that we would steal a USB connection from the input module and run it down to the mouse area and connect everything up.
However, with the width of the smallest trackpad module being so large, I don’t really see a way to fit the trackpad AND the drawing tablet at the same time without cutting up an existing trackpad module. Has anyone done a project to make a smaller trackpad module to make more space on the left and right for more modding activities?
There is an open source, open hardware trackpad available from ploopy co, ploopy.co/trackpad. Iirc the touch driver chip it uses can do whatever size you want my tweaking its config. You could use the hardware and firmware files as a base to make one in the size you need.
I was hoping to use the actual module made by Framework. I can’t imagine the actual hardware for the trackpad takes the entire palm rest area, and I’m hoping someone has already made a CAD file for a mini-trackpad module casing that I can plop an existing trackpad in to.
EDIT: to be clear, a “case” the interlocks with the spacers and the Framework 16’s lower laptop deck.
Well, it shouldn’t be too big a problem. Framework released an STL for people to 3D print a full width panel to take the trackpad. I’m sure that could be used as the basis for a narrower trackpad mount, or make a full width panel that would take both the trackpad and drawing panel.
Cool! But no one’s actually done it or published their work probably so I’d have to do it myself. I’m not particularly good at that kind of thing, but I guess it’s a skill I should learn.
