Which release version? 22.2 (Ubuntu 24.04)
(if rolling release without a release version, skip this question)
(If rolling release, last date updated?)
Which kernel are you using? 6.14
Which BIOS version are you using? 3.04 (latest)
Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 + NVIDIA 5070 graphics
Problem:
No graphics in Linux Mint 22.2 unless Nvidia Mux set to NVIDIA GPU only. The default was “Optimus” but when booting off the Mint live cd thumb drive, it’d boot but as soon as it’s supposed to initialize the graphics and switch to GUI, it just sits there on a black screen. It would boot with graphics if I chose “Compatibility Mode” on the Mint thumb drive startup option, but then things like my touchpad wouldn’t work and it wouldn’t accept a USB mouse either.
I finally figured out if I set Mux to “NVIDIA Only” Linux Mint live cd installer would work normal, it’d boot and there’d be graphics and mouse and I Linux mint could be installed, and linux mint would seemingly work like normal. I even installed the NVIDIA drivers.
Except I can’t get an external display to work. If I tried the other 2 Mux options (Hybrid or Optimus) I get no video/graphics on startup. Just a black screen.
This is the latest version of the BIOS and all the firmware, latest version of Linux Mint 22.2, latest kernel. I even installed the nvidia 380 open drivers and then tried the various Mux options but only “NVIDIA Only” works.
I have the same specs and the exact same problem. I have even tried different kernels 6.12,6.14,6.17,6.18 all have the same problem. I am trying to install Manjaro. it seems the amdgpu can’t take over the display at boot. if you plug an external monitor when you see the black screen it will suddenly enable the laptop and the external monitor screen. mesa, firmware drivers, nvidia drivers are up to date. been driving me insane for the last two days trying get it to just boot to the login screen on my laptop screen. Side-note Windows 11 and ubuntu 25.10 boots fine.
Ubuntu 25.10 works fine? That’s interesting. Gotta try that. I love Linux Mint but I need my laptop to work properly in Linux so maybe I can go with Ubuntu 25.10 and Cinnamon. I’m curious what would make 25.10 work properly, I can install the latest xanmod 6.18 kernel and latest nvidia drivers in Linux Mint 22.2/Ubuntu 24.04 if that’s what it is.
I can confirm that Windows 11 works when I have Mux set to NVIDIA only and also Hybrid I think. I don’t think Optimus works, not even in Windows.
Well I can confirm it does work in Ubuntu 25.10 with Kernel 6.17; the live cd/thumb drive worked perfectly in any of the 3 Nvidia MUX options. I’ve gone with Hybrid for now.
I really wanted Linux Mint but I guess the Ubuntu 24.04 base is just too old for such a new laptop as this one. I tried to use Xanmod 6.18 kernel latest version but it requires a newer version of some core library, the kernel wouldn’t install properly. I could have fought it more, but I caved in and just needed something that works so I went with “Ubuntu Cinnamon 25.10” since I’m most familiar w/ the the Cinnamon interface. When Linux Mint 23.x comes out, which will be Ubuntu 26.04 based, I’ll happily jump to that. I can live with this for the next 7-8 months.
