I’m curious to see if there was any interest in development of a new board for the Framework 13’s microphone and webcam module. The second gen module was released a bit ago and is included in the 13 Pro now, but what about a higher megapixel (downsampled to something like 1440p instead of the 1080p, less grainy audio, etc?
Was thinking something along the lines of using the Sony IMX477 sensor, and sensiBel SBM100B mics, etc? Thinking of throwing something together and sending it to PCBWay to test it. Honestly idk what I’m doing so I’m curious what y’all think.

Yeah, kinda. Is having control over the sensor correction/calibration firmware a plausible option?

I don’t really need a new Webcam but I think one that had better resolution would be nice. Personally I’d could use a better microphone or a sensor that could support Windows Hellow.
I like the idea, but when I think about my use case I don’t actually have a use for it or much use for the two I listed.
I keep both my Webcam and microphone off always. As much as I’d like them to be better I’d probably never use them.

Possibly, yes. I did want to have the main goal of being drop in replaced with no additional required firmware or drivers that the 13 can’t already do, with the only chats you notice be a higher resolution, better low light Possibly, better audio quality, maybe 60fps, and the 1440p selection on apps instead of capping at 1080p.
This would be a major first project of mine so any tips would be greatly appreciated. I’ve never done any fab design for boards before, nor firmware/hardware mods ever on my own.
I want to try, but it’s a bit cost prohibitive at the moment unless I can get a few people interested in helping me test multiple boards for a good batch discount!
Any thoughts on what you specifically would like to see?
This was one of the things I was told about to look into, I actually don’t know a lot about Windows Hello (I’m running Mint), it’s the current one just not good enough for WH to accurately get a sound profile of your voice?
Do you think id need extra firmware or is it just an audio quality issue? Because quality would noticeably improve with the mic I’m considering.
If I do go through with the project I’ll obviously share every step and failure lol
I think it’s a lack of certain hardware which is why it doesn’t have it.
Ok looked into it and there’s a bit more to the Windows hello than I realized. Windows Hello is both facial recognition (which is what I thought it was) and fingerprint (which is currently supported on FW laptops). The facial recognition requires an IR sensor which the current webcam doesn’t have.

Gotcha. Since this will be a drop in replacement, I think I may unfortunately want to stray away from that especially as a first project of mine. If I learn enoughfrom this i might tackle it
This is definitely the Tinkerers Laptop, aye?
