Anyone else had issues with recent Fedora 44 update?

I just updated my system to the latest packages on Fedora 44 (Plasma) and many applications aren’t working now. For instance Blender seems to be missing dependencies and some Steam Games (Guild Wars 2) are now crashing the entire system on launch. My best guess right now is that something during the update became borked, perhaps because I downloaded and “installed” the updates last week, but didn’t actually reboot to install them until today with sleeps inbetween.

I tried my previous kernel, and that didn’t resolve anything.

Not asking for help fixing this install, I’m thinking it’ll be far easier and more reliable to just install a fresh OS and start over. Could also be an excuse to distro hop, CachyOS and Gentoo are looking kind of shiny right now.

Is if anyone else here has had a similar experience with the recent update to Fedora 44?

Hi @TechPriestNhyk,

FYI… I also run Fedora 44 on a 7940HS and 7700S graphics card and my rig hasn’t missed a beat since upgrading all OS and software within the last couple of days.

I do work my 16 quite hard but I’m one if those odd balls that don’t do any gaming.

I have run several distros on my 16 including Mint, Ubuntu and CachyOS and have found Fedora the best performing and most reliable of the pack.

Good luck with the move to either Gentoo or Cachy… sounds like fun!

Not Fedora but I run Bazzite and I have been struggling for the past week. 7040HS and Nvidia 5070. Enough so that I’ve been considering OS hopping as well. I’m hoping that my rebase was into a better version; I only just realized yesterday that the whole system didn’t recognize the GPU for… much of anything (so all my steam games were doing their best on the iGPU).

Hoping the changes I made will stick, but going to a distro that makes it easier to tinker with seems likely for me. I only started with Linux about a year ago, so I’m still fairly new to it all.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the input fellas. My suspicion is that somehow my updates were corrupted via “installing” them but not actually doing the required reboot until days later. I’ve decided I’m gonna give Gentoo a 2nd chance. It seems fun, but also like a PITA.

Yours would have updated from Plasma 6.5 to the latest Plasma 6.7

That is a major update and yes, it does have some bugs in it as you get with all major changes.

Plasma 6.7.1 is just around the corner within the next few days which deals with a lot of the reported bugs.

KDE uses discover as the GUI update tool. It is set by default to check for updates daily.

If you want a more stable system for longer, you can adjust the update frequency in:

System Settings/System (on the LHS bar down the bottom)/software update

Here you can change “notification frequency” from daily to weekly to monthly to never.

So if you have a good working system on which you like minimum disruption, then I would choose weekly or monthly.

It’s possible that the Plasma upgrade is what broke some of my games, but I’m not sure that’s what’s responsible for the missing libraries that blender needs to run. I’m installing Gentoo right now, but I used a different drive so I still have my Fedora installation. I may try putting that back in a few weeks from now to see if the issues resolve themselves.
