Batch 3 - Intel 12th Gen - Guild

I received mine, updated on the spreadsheet. Hardware and software went well so far. Still need to disable secure boot in windows 11 so I can dual boot pop os. But no major issues overall.

Also received mine today. Got RAM, storage all populated and was installing Ubuntu in minutes. Itā€™s a beautiful machine and Iā€™ve very happy so far.

Pretty disappointed to see people in other countries who ordered the i7-1260pā€™s getting theirs, but those in the UK have stalled, potentially I guess due to keyboards as thatā€™s the only customisation that would cause a problem. If so, perhaps less of the i5ā€™s should have been dispatched earlierā€¦

Iā€™ve just had the email through from Framework that theyā€™re preparing to ship my order (i7-1260p) for UK delivery, so hopefully, it shouldnā€™t be too much longer!

Me too. Must have got the keyboards in!

for my order still waiting, ordered on the 30th of August (30-08). only one person with same specs (cpu/ram/adapter) after me has filled further steps in the spreadsheet. only difference was the storage, no clue if they are/were out of sn770 1tb drives or that US shipping has more priority then EU/NL. becoming impatient but Iā€™ll keep waiting.

might even be that the person made a mistake while selecting the processor on the spreadsheet

Mine was on the 11th in UK if that helps. Only just got step 3 email today.

Just received my 12th gen DIY today. I also updated the spreadsheet already. It was shipped on 9/19 and arrived in Alaska on 9/23.
12th gen 1280p + power cord
64gb ram
4x usb c
2x usb a
1x dp, hdmi,
1x 250gb storage
1x 1tb storage
2tb 850nvme WD (from Amazon prime day)

I plan on installing ubuntu on it when I get the chance, but Iā€™m waiting on thermal cooling supplies from Amazon to arrive, probably tomorrow.

Itā€™s heavy! Iā€™m accustomed to Samsung tablets and itā€™s been 8 years since I owned a laptop.

But also itā€™s beautiful!

Wait, what? What cooling supplies? Do I need to order anything to be able to assemble my DIY once it arrives?

No. DIY is essentially just plugging in SSD and RAM. There is even a Framework screwdriver included in the box, so you could effectively assemble it on the spot without sourcing any tool.

Thank you. Got worried for a minute. @Lisa_C could you explain what do you mean by the ā€œcooling suppliesā€ youā€™re waiting on? Are you planning to put the laptop in a transparent minifreezer to help with thermal issues I heard about?

Maybe some cooling related things such as CPU termal paste, SSD heat sink or laptop cooling padā€¦

I plan on really maxing out the capability of the machine. I wanted to make sure that I donā€™t have to disassemble it later if the ssd or cpu gets too hot. I plan on getting an eGPU for gaming later this year. My last laptop was an Alienware and it definitely ran hot while gaming.

I ordered a thermal grizzly ssd cooler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GHR1DN2, some thermal paste, and copper padshttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YC1HTFR (also for the ssd - I wasnā€™t sure if the heat sink on the ssd would actually fit so I ordered the copper pads). When I originally ordered the laptop, I saw some commentary on various web forums that the SN850 series nvme ssd might run a little hot; sorry I didnā€™t keep any notes on that and itā€™s been since summer that I read that.

Anyway, this isnā€™t a requirement, I just want to set it up this way to start with because I plan on pushing it to the limit. This is probably overkill, but extra cooling supplies are cheap so why not?

My end goal is to get myself off Windows permanently in the next few years, so I really need to figure out how to do all my work and play with linux, and this is the first step.

Hey, thatā€™s interesting! I might be compiling a lot of Rust on that machine on my NixOS. How much does it help? Maybe I should do the same. I ordered the maxed out version and Iā€™m aware it might be running hot. If I could help it, I would. Let me know how it went and I think Iā€™m going to order the same stuff. Iā€™m glad Iā€™ve asked!

Could you please share what day you placed your order?

At this point, I fail to see a pattern to how the laptops are built and shipped, assuming orders from all regions are processed by the same factory in Taiwan.

I ordered a 1260p with a French keyboard in august, and :

  • several 1260p laptops have shipped to the US to people who ordered many days after me (so the CPU is available)
  • several 1240p laptops have shipped to France over 10 days ago to people who ordered at the same time (so the keyboard is/was available ā€“ unless they ordered QWERTY keyboards ? the spreadsheet doesnā€™t say)

Their last two emails also contradict themselves :

  • the first email says they have inventory for all batch 3 orders
  • the second email says they have charged all orders they have inventory for, but I wasnā€™t charged, so I guess they do not have inventory for my batch 3 orders (and many others)

Anyway, I can wait, this is not a big issue, but itā€™s still disconcertingā€¦
