I’ll use Linux so I wont have this problem I think, but I feel stuff like this makes me wary of using the Framework at all >~>
I just hope the majority of people don’t have issues and don’t post about not having issues and that this is some kind of bias. I know apple forums are also full of issues (and I did have issues with my old macbook) but it still feels weird to see so many people post problems
I hope yours get solved, please keep us up to date
Well, lets do not blame FrameWork here - maybe it is just something AMD-crap or Windows-crap related? We do not know - I hope it will get more clarified and fixed.
I did not get used to AMD hardware I think - never had any troubles with TPM in any device (mostly Dells and IBM/Lenovo and mostly blue ones).
“Hybrid sleep” in Windows11 is some extra nasty thing I am afraid and perhaps it comes to play here.
I will try to reconfigure some powerplans to test more, but for the next 10 days I am outside office and will check nothing
Let’s also do not spam this topic with irrelevant things
I have canceled my pre-order and ordered a Lenovo Legion Pro 7 with Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, RTX 5080 16GB, 240Hz OLED panel………………………for ~$500 less than my Framework pre-order.
I’ve been debating this since I pulled the trigger on my pre-order, as I love my FL13, and my mom and sister love their FL13 & FL16. The 8GB VRAM limit in the 5070 module was the #1 factor in my decision. If they were able to achieve anything over 10GB, I would have stayed.
My goal for my next device is to replace my desktop, I play a lot of heavy games, I just don’t think the FL16 Gen 2 is right for me. Given the price premium for the device itself and motherboard/GPU upgrades just for the warm and fuzzies about e-waste, it just doesn’t make sense for me with the specs I can get elsewhere. I would love to see Framework add gamer focused specs in future modules.
I wish you all godspeed getting your pre-orders in December! Given how Batch 3 still hasn’t received anything yet, it’s almost certainly going to get pushed to late January if I had to guess.
I didnt get the graphics module for this exact reason, 8GB vram is fine if you maybe want to add some gaming performance but for things like machine learning tasks its kind of a bummer. My 5 year old gaming laptop with the 3080 is more useful than this module solely because of the 16gb vram!
The reason they stuck with 8gb was because if they did 16, the laptop would have been even bigger because the cards dont come with this size in 8gb. Who knows what happens in the future but for now its a constraint we have to live with
I really can’t wait till it arrives though, I have so many ideas regarding mods and all
Thanks for bringing 8GB VRAM limit to the attention. I have 16GB VRAM in Intel Arc Pro B50 currently and did not notice that we are limited to 8GB VRAM here.
By the way, I should add here that I didn’t get the 128GB kit (yet). Instead I opted for just buying just the 64Gb from Framework themselves. I did this because the RAM market is now so on its hinds that I can’t even buy the 128gb kit anymore even if I wanted to at these inflated prices… Its sold out literally everywhere. I did find it on Vinted (some kind of European Ebay) for like 200 bucks but I dont trust it for obvious reasons…)
But dont worry there’s plenty of other things I plan to do with this beauty in the meantime, in particular some 3D printed parts and artwork.. We’ll see!
Bought on Oct 22nd, I hope I’ll get news soon… Even if it’s to say it’ll be shipped in January. I decided to replace my 4 years old Framework 13, and since my pre-order the laptop started to have some issues. So I’m debating either changing stuff in the 13 or upgrading then fixing the 13 later to make a desktop with it. But I do need the AI stuff…
System: AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series - Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370
Originally was Batch 6 as I ordered 29th September, but then I removed the GPU Module to save some cash, and will get it later, and that bumped me over to Batch 7 (Why would removing a part do that, but anyway?).
Didn’t include SSD or Memory as I am sourcing those separately.
I do already have the Micron 96GB Ram kit suggested by Framework, cost me about AUD$550 for that, and then just days later because of the huge RAM demand by AI, the same kit basically doubled in price to around AUD$1K (I got lucky there).
As for SSD’s, I’ll just get something decent from Amazon or Ebay once the time arrives for the laptop to actually prepare to ship.
I guess Batch 7 will probably end up getting paired up with Batch 6 anyways given they like to group them?
I dont understand why DDR5 RAM is so in demand by AI. Isn’t it relatively slow compared to soldered-on RAM or just VRAM?
Feels like its mostly scalpers that try to anticipate on it. I thought waiting for it to drop was a good idea, but now I can’t even buy it anymore here lol… Because its sold out everywhere
DRAM is still needed to run the computers in the massive data centers popping up around Ai training but that’s not really the bad part, the bad part is that fabs are shifting manufacturing to more lucrative ICs for things like HBM and VRAM while people making the actual DRAM modules (DIMM/SODIMM) are also shifting to make more server grade sticks and allocate less product for consumer grade.
That mixed with system integrators buying up all the supply of consumer ram so they have a stockpile for building with and to some extent so that when they raise the prices because of market conditions they can make bigger profits having bought it before they themselves inflated the costs even more by buying it.
Oh and soldered on RAM is the same DRAM as DIMM/SODDIM RAM just closer to the cpu with everything integrated onto the motherboard for superior timings and signal strength.
Still not seeing any communication or payment for my pre-order. This is my first time with Framework and no communication is leaving a bad experience. Starting to wonder if it will even get here by February or at all. Would be good to just an updated ETA.
I dont think there’s a lack of communication. I’d say by the end of december they are required to provide an update for shipment, until then, they are perfectly on spec
Thanks for the clarification, I understand it better now… I hope this changes soon, in my country it only gets worse so far, but with 64GB Ram I’m ok for a long time so I can wait for bigger specced RAM sticks
I have only limited experience with Framework (bought a 12 from them this autumn), but they promised 3rd quarter and delivered at the beginning of that window. They have been announcing tranches a little more slowly than I had hoped, but these bundles of shipping notices have been coming in groups. Based on the pattern thus far, we are likely to get charging and shipping notices around the new year. That would be a little late, but not disastrously (or even, given the season, unexpectedly) so.
Getting news during the holidays saying we’d get it in January or February would be perfectly fine for me. I can’t wait to replace my 4 years old laptop.
