I figured this out in the end, but I’m posting this in case anyone has a similar problem on the 16:

The bluetooth signal between my 16 and headphones randomly cut out, and the bluetooth button disappeared from the control menu, along with the settings page for bluetooth connections. Checking device manager, the bluetooth section had disappeared as well, and there was a new USB driver that had an error labelled “device descriptor check failed”.

Checked the forum, and found a similar issue on the 13 when people updated drivers or bios, and first tried to reinstall drivers, uninstalling the faulty USB one first, then restarting.

Then found that some people reported VPN conflicts with their bluetooth drivers, and uninstalled my VPN application. Repated the driver reinstallation process, still no luck.

Finally read someone’s suggestion to **uninstall the faulty USB driver, reboot in bios, disconnect the battery from there, then restart. This fixed it.**

While this did fix my issue, I did want to mention that this issue happened to me twice.

Wanted to add step by step instructions with pictures for me, since some parts of this were confusing to me (No fault to OP, I never heard of a Battery Disconnect from BIOS before)

1. **Uninstall the Faulty USB Driver from Device Manager**

The Device was labeled as “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” for me.

 ![mmc_H4VTrfblPF](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex001/uploads/framework3/original/3X/1/d/1dad8ae43e4df4e47f9a92075a7f8cde6fffdc4f.png)

1. **Reboot into the BIOS and choose “Battery Disconnect”**

I got to the BIOS by spamming F12 on reboot, but I feel free to check docs if that’s the right button to press.

I didn’t want to dig out my capture card for this, so you’ll have to live with my photo for this one.

 ![20240518_231219](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex001/uploads/framework3/original/3X/9/9/99f2287a587ab73a607beb3152fc5aacfbfa5deb.jpeg)

1. **Restart**

Because of how the BIOS Battery Disconnect works, you won’t be able to restart without an external power source (doesn’t necessarily have to be AC power like the BIOS says, but that’s probably the easiest option)

This should resolve the issue, but I’ve also encountered this issue twice, so I have no idea if this is just a temporary fix that I’ll need to reapply every so often. This fix requires a reboot as well as external power, which means that I’m in trouble if it happens if I’m on the go.

Well, here’s to hoping that this doesn’t happen a 3rd time. Hope someone finds this helpful.

Thanks for the temp fix, I just started having this issue.
It is interesting that you mentioned VPN drivers. I have not had this problem for the past two weeks that I have had the latest drivers and BIOS installed but It did start a few hours after I had installed PIA vpn, although I have had OpenVPN and Wireguard installed from the start with no issues. For me the bug started shortly after I connected two devices at the same time to my laptop on windows 11. Both a Logitech mouse and Samsung earbuds.

Good to know I’m not the only one experiencing that issue, I already have a support ticket open with them about this and had it happen to me about 4 to 5 times now.

So far haven’t found a permanent solution, though your fix seems interesting, since I couldn’t figure out a reliable way to get it working again every time it happened.

The last thing I tried while waiting for the issue to reoccur was installing the bluetooth driver from windows updates which was the suggestion from framework support.

Just got this same issue. I got my FW about a month ago, no VPN software installed.
@Michael-R how do you install the Bluetooth Driver from Windows updates?

I got it from [https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=RZ616%20bluetooth](https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=RZ616%20bluetooth)
which is the link that Framework Support sent me, now it listed quite a lot of options, and the one I downloaded specifically was this one [https://catalog.s.download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2024/04/8eadcec3-02f2-4954-91db-4e650d894a2c\_62b4c6ce6f5f50004b9d207a9f1ccb164b467076.cab](https://catalog.s.download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2024/04/8eadcec3-02f2-4954-91db-4e650d894a2c_62b4c6ce6f5f50004b9d207a9f1ccb164b467076.cab) which downloads as a .cab file which contains the driver files.

I extracted the contents into a new folder, then selected the mtkbtfilter.inf file, right clicked that and then selected install.

Though as of now I’m not sure if this will finally prevent the problem from reoccuring, though so far it has worked for me.

Just to share an update on my issue it now has happened again, so just updating the drivers doesn’t permanently fix the problem unfortunately, I’ll keep in contact with framework support to see where this is going.

Btw it turns out a faster workaround is to perform a hard shutdown in windows by holding shift then pressing shut down, this seemed to have worked when I tried it.

I also have this same issue and am working with Framework Support, I will update if anything is found. Thanks for the hard shutdown tip, going to the BIOS is kind of annoying!

Hey y’all I’m back. I may have found a solution, its been holding up for a few days now. Basically, as much as I hate to say it, you need to update your drivers. _ **But** _ it’s not your fault, Windows doesn’t like to make it easy since the new driver isn’t “verified”. So:

- Go to the [Windows driver page](https://catalog.s.download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2024/04/8eadcec3-02f2-4954-91db-4e650d894a2c_62b4c6ce6f5f50004b9d207a9f1ccb164b467076.cab) and install the top .cab file to the directory of your choice. For example C:\Users\nicho\Downloads.

- Go to Device Manager → right-click **RZ616 Bluetooth Adapter** → **Update Driver**

- Click **Browse my computer for drivers** → **Let me pick…**

- Uncheck **Show compatible hardware** → scroll to **Mediatek Inc.** → select latest version (not automatically in order)

Windows will warn you that it is not verified or whatever. Ignore and update anyways. Additionally, I have the latest 3.04 Beta BIOS update Framework sent out a few days ago. I hope it holds up better than other solutions!

–

_Unfortunately I won’t be able to do a long-term test because, due to CPU constantly being at 90-100°C under any load, they are sending me a new Mainboard. Shoutout to their amazing customer service!_

Hi all, returning to this after a long time… the new bios update drastically improves the bluetooth and wifi speeds in connecting to modems/devices (for me at least), and since updating the issue has not happened again. I definitely second the driver update recommendations on top of the new bios update.

Can confirm that the only way that it fixed for me was forcefully holding down the power button to reboot manually. I tried software reboots before but it wasn’t working. I also tried updating, uninstalling, reinstalling drivers, but didn’t work either.

So bottom line is force reset it

I found this problem occurred every few days for me and was very frustrating. In the end, I just swapped the RZ616 for an Intel AX210 back in October 2023 and I’ve had no issues since.

See: [Bluetooth module disconnecting/disappearing (Win 11, Device Descriptor Request Failed)](http://community.frame.work/t/bluetooth-module-disconnecting-dissapearing-win-11-device-descriptor-request-failed/58161/6) Looking around online, I can see some evidence that other people are having similar issues with other brands of laptop and the RZ616 card. So, I was wondering if I could swap out this MediaTek/AMD experiment for something that w…

I had the same problem with my 13. I followed the instructions in the forum and it seemed to work. However, the PC would not start after shutting down after the reboot with external power plugged in. After several tries just pushing the power button and having no response, I tried holding Ctrl-Alt-Del while the power light was lit and the PC restarted with the BT driver installed. Hopefully this won’t happen again but from other comments, it seems that it is very possible
