Brightness control doing nothing

Framework 16, 7040 series with the 7700S installed. Running recently upgraded Kubuntu 26.04 (w/ KDE Plasma). Kernel 7.0.0-34.generic. I dual boot Windows, where brightness controls work, so there’s an issue with Linux itself.

I’ve tried editing /etc/default/grub with different params (acpi_backlight=native, i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0, amdgpu.backlight=0, and other configs), nothing has been working.

cat /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl2/bl_power always outputs 0. /atual_brightness is always 13339. /brightness ranges from 1 to 65535 based on what the UI says is the brightness.

I recently ran amdgpu-install to get ROCm and graphics SDKs, not sure if this may have caused this issue.

There’s no indication of errors at least from journalctl. Is there a lingering known bug with backlight control in kernel 7, or is there something else that could be causing this issue??

similar issue here on arch with kde, using fn+f7/8 from the top of my head, to change brightness, doesn’t work for about half a minute after logging in. it is ‘fixed’ after that until next login.

but it isn’t completely blocked like in your case.

I think I resolved the issue in my setup- amdgpu-install installs dkms drivers, overriding the kernel drivers. Uninstalling and reinstalling with --no-dkms has fixed the issue.

It would appear that dkms in amdgpu-install has a bug with the Framework 16…?

Don’t install the DKMS. It is a snapshot of time that has bugs.

Everything you need for the kernel is already inbox.
