CachyOS install can hibernate with command but not timeout or lid close

I would like my laptop to automatically hibernate after a timeout of about 10 minutes. I often forget to power it off and find all the battery has drained after keeping RAM running for hours in sleep.

I had to create a manual hard drive swap file in order for CachyOS hibernate to work at all. now hibernate works as expected with the systemctl hibernate command. however, when hibernate is triggered with the timeout in the power management settings or when closing the lid, the screen goes blank but it stays blank even after pressing the power button to wake from hibernation. the system remains completely unresponsive except sometimes it will play the USB device connected/disconnected sound if I plug in or remove a USB device. I have also tried removing all USB C expansion cards in case those were interfering (seemed so based on some of the logs and previous tests that at least USB C to USB A expansion cards would prevent the laptop from hibernating in the first place).

feel free to direct me elsewhere if this appears to be more of a software issue with CachyOS

Hibernating manually working is allready a pretty good sign.

I personally don’t really use sleep and hibernate directly but what you are looking for is called hybrid-sleep or suspend-then-hibernate
