Many short articles are claiming the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Gen 14 is much more repairable, earning 9/10 iFixit score, via a redesign for replaceable parts such as modular ports.
This one has interior pictures that help explain what the press release wording means.
Clearly, the inspiration here is the hyper-modular Framework Laptop …
… newly modular parts include components like many of the I/O port headers, the battery, the speakers, and the cooling fans. (Also, the keyboard, attached by magnets, pries off without the need for any tools, as you can see below.) …
… stopping short of adopting a fully modular chassis that would allow you to swap in items like ports on the fly from outside the chassis.
An interior picture shows ports implemented as screwed down metal components connecting the motherboard edge socket and the exterior socket. Another picture shows port(s) on small daughter boards between the fans and the outside of the case.
So the ports may be replaceable, possibly upgradable in the future, but not interchangeable, not rearrangeable/personalizable. No mention of openness to third-party implementation of custom ports.
