with them standing vertically, right? right?
That would certainly up the shitpost factor.
Wanted to show off my new Framework laptop. Showing my Debian Testing Gnome screenshots and lsblk. Once again cool, but minor (or maybe major) complain to framework : Why is the keyboard not backlit? Can’t use in low/no light conditions.
Anyways, i am sure they will have a keyboard upgrade hopefully coming soon.
Screenshots:
Advanced users don’t look at the keyboard when they type. Even on cheap keyboards. But the built-in keyboard of this laptop has its keys virtually indistinguishable from each other, except for the keys F and J.
i have to find the outer right key with my fingers and count left to find the arrow or control keys! And the top half of the Enter key is problematic because it’s hard to feel the border with it and the other key.
It’s bad.
I am not directly saying that I disagree, but I just don’t think it is that bad. The light from the display in dark situations has been enough for me to re-find my personal home position on the keyboard. It would be great if it was backlit though.
I’m not talking about home position. Just trying to type a short example program I must use a lot of special characters and it’s hard to distinguish buttons.
And well - for using Emacs it sucks. I already have some muscle memory and it’s hard to hit all the correct keys and do it reasonably fast.
The “F” and the “J” keys, on all keyboards, should have a raised divot, so you can identify them in the dark, so that you can position your hands on the keyboard.
That is true for F and J. I find those pretty easily.
But I use other keys too. Both left and right Ctrl and Alt keys, / and \, single and double quotes, the Functional keys and some others pretty often.
Also you can’t feel with your fingers only the border of the enter key.
It’s not acceptable to look so often at the keyboard for an advanced user who knows his most used shortcuts. I have around 15 years of experience with Emacs and I use exclusively Gnome which also has some nice shortcuts for common operations.
I would like to suggest an upgraded mainboard and color accurate screen.
First of all the current intel chips are not efficient enough having been made on 10nm. With Panther Lake being released, Core Ultra 5 322 or 325 would make FW12 so much efficient with battery and allow Thunderbolt 4.
We can also consider using Wildcat Lake even. They will be released mid-2026 and is the same A18 architecture as panther lake, good efficiency, up to 6 cores, 2XE gpus, and comes with thunderbolt 4 support as well.
Secondly, for being a 2-in-1 device with wide stylus support, 67% sRGB is unusable for artists. I would like to see 100%sRGB screen.
I never realized how much I sit in the dark until the FW12. I would like a lighted keyboard. When my hands are positioned on the home row and I’m typing, sure it’s fine. but they are not always there, and I need to hit the occasional random keys. Or when I’m first logging in looking at the nice plymouth animation - key’s aren’t lit yet. I’m sure this will mean I will give up my sub 1/2w drain during sleep though.
The main thing I think I want (for all frameworks actually) is drivers in Windows update…
I’ve been thinking about getting a Framework 12 for my mom, but there are just a handful of things that I think require basic technical know-how, and the driver bundles are high on that list.
Liking my laptop quite a lot and nice to be back fully on Linux. But sure there are improvements, what might be tempting, when get released for FW12
- OLED screen, my wife has laptop with OLED and colours are unmatched.
- Fingerprint sensor, mainly to use passkeys without having phone near.
- ARM mainboard for much more possible efficency.
- Backlit keyboard but this is like, i can work around with onscreen keyboard when in dark. And new KDE keyboard coming with 6.6 looks much better too. So this is 50/50.
