Configuration Science Survey

Hello! I’m doing some science and would like your input!

What configurations are your favorite? Why? It can be any product (12, 13, 16, Desktop - can also be purchased or thinking about it, just make sure to label if you purchased it or not). I’d love to know your thoughts! Feel free to drop a comment below.

[Please don’t use this thread for troubleshooting or other topics. I’m doing science :frowning:]

Thanks!

My favourite is (will be) the 192GB Framework Desktop with a cheeky 50% off voucher during this year’s Black Friday. I have not purchased it yet, waiting for BF! :cat_with_wry_smile:

No expansion cards?

Well, send me a link to the 192GB machine configurator, and I’ll get it specced out! :upside_down_face:

The 32GB Framework Desktop! I got it early this year since I desperately needed to upgrade from a dying laptop, and it’s been a solid powerhouse for all of my gaming, dev, and art needs + a breath of fresh air to switch from Windows to Linux.

Weirdly enough, the RAM crisis made it easier to go for a Framework. I already had it on my radar, but when many brands were exploding in price, Framework’s transparency and initial attempts to absorb costs made it feel more accessible and “safe” to jump on their train. Still pretty happy with that decision. When prices get back to normal(ish), I’m looking forward to upgrading a secondhand 13 I got not long ago.

do you mind sharing what storage, fan, and expansion cards you went with? :eyes:

I have a FW16 7840HS with 64GB Ram, no dGPU.
I have one card of hdmi, dp, usb-a, the rest usb-c.
I am probably holding off buying a newer one until i hear that the usb compatibility and power management are fixed in hardware. FW would sell a lot more laptops if they fixed the hardware problems in new products.

My needs are firstly laptop with 16" display, then lots of Ram.
I don’t need anything else, but a HDR display option would be nice.
Marketing wise, an option for the budget minded consumer, and then an option for users who don’t care about the budget.

thank you for sharing your input :folded_hands:

Sure!

  • Storage was the 2TB SANDISK SN7100, mainly because my previous laptop’s 1TB was about to be reached.
  • 2x USB-A + 2x USB-C expansion cards
  • And the Mobius 120p ARGB for the fan. Do I need RGB? No. But it’s my first desktop, and I wanted a little whimsy.

FW 16, 7840HS/7700S dGPU, 64Gb RAM, 4Tb 990 Pro/2 Tb P310. 4 USB-C, 1 USB-A, 1 Audio Expansion Card’s my usual setup (I have an HDMI, MicroSD, and 1 Tb Storage as swapouts).

Honestly, I love this thing. My big “want” would be AMD getting off their tail and making a newer dGPU.

Considering…

13 Pro, Intel (not sure which one)

32GB ram (64 if prices get sane) My current 16 GB main desktop spends most of the day almost maxed out)

Either 2 or 4 TB storage or 1 TB + external SSDs. I have lots of big files.

2 USB-C, 2 USB-A, Ethernet, HDMI… ??

Windows 11 home

All components (except external ssd) would be from Framework, but I really wish they would offer a Build-to-Order option, because none of the pre-builts have the combinations of parts I would want. I’m close to 80 than 70, not nearly as do-it-yourself-y as 15 years ago, and I really, REALLY want whatever I get to be assembled AND TESTED in advance.

Here is my FW13P configuration (Batch 14 not here yet)

  • System: Ultra X7 358H

  • Memory: LPCAMM2 - LPDDR5X - 16GB

  • Storage: ADATA MARS 970 PLUS PCIe® 5.0 M.2 2280 - 1TB

  • Laptop Bezel: Framework Laptop 13 Bezel - Translucent

  • Keyboard: US English - Graphite - Gray/Black

  • Power Adapter: Power Adapter - 100W - US/Canada

  • 2 x USB-C (Plastic - Translucent Orange)

  • Ethernet

  • SD - Aluminum - Graphite

  • USB-A (2nd Gen) - Aluminum - Graphite

  • HDMI (3rd Gen) - Aluminum - Graphite

First the obvious RAM is expensive so I figured I could live with 16GB
X7 because I need some CPU power for Light CFD FEA and gaming
1TB because I ran out of space on 500gb and with the size of games these days also space for AI models.

I wish the display was a tiny bit bigger like 14" or so but I think that the 3:2 Ratio will help negate that minor downside also exited for the new screen it looks cool. I am a bit worried about the thermals and performance wish that it was a little more unlocked especially seeing the close to linear that scale with power that is seen in Panther Lake.

Currently my FW16 config that I built out:

  • Machine: AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370

  • Memory: G.Skill DDR5 5600 CL40 - 64GB

  • Storage: Samsung 9100 Pro 4TB & Corsair MP600 MINI 1TB

  • Laptop Bezel: Black

  • Keyboard: US English

  • 1x FW16 LED Matrix spacer

  • 1x Color shift Spacer

  • Power: FW power adapter 240W US

  • 4x USB-C (Aluminum)

  • 1x USB-A (2nd Gen) - Aluminum

  • 1x Ethernet - WisdPi 10G Ethernet Expansion Card

  • AMD’s RZ717 Wi-Fi module

Wish list (1 highest priority):

  1. New expansion Bay Shell with 2nd Gen/larger fans
  2. More robust heatsink/heat pipe design
  3. Display a 17" (HDR would be great)
  4. More powerful Battery
  5. Transparent Bezel
  6. Transparent Ventilation Plate

Framework Desktop
System: Ryzen™ AI Max+ 395 - 128GB
Storage: SANDISK 850X PCIe® 4.0 M.2 2280 - 2TB
CPU Fan: Noctua - NF-A12x25 HS-PWM
USB-A
USB-C (Aluminum - Silver)

Got it end of last year and it’s my favorite machine by far. I love how powerful it is, but even more how quiet and power efficient it is. It’s my gaming / personal development / local AI machine.

Framework Laptop 13
System: Ultra 5 125H
Display: 2.2K
Memory: DDR5-5600 - 32GB (1 x 32GB)
Storage: SANDISK 850X PCIe® 4.0 M.2 2280 - 1TB
2 x USB-A
2 x USB-C (Aluminum - Silver)

Have it for about two years and I’m super happy with it. Favorite things are everything working out of the box on Linux, built-in fingerprint reader and great battery life. I lowkey regret not going for more RAM - I managed to run out of memory on a couple occasions now that I use it for work - but I’m definitely not upgrading in this market.

from frameworks
1x strix halo 395+ 128Gb mainboard + CM fan
2x usb type-e extender
1x usb-A expansion
1x hdmi expansion
1x FSP standard PSU (replaced by coolermaster MWE v3 750w)
no chasis
just barebones

I need to buy a new laptop now and would like to buy a framework 16.

The items holding me back are that I use Thunderbolt for when I’m in the office. When working remote I need a 4k display as I routinely remote connect to other PC’s with 4k displays. To hard on a low-res laptop display.

Hopefully we see a motherboard refresh like the 13" laptop.

If a Framework 16 with the following features gets release and I would place my order;

· Intel core ultra X7 or X9

· 64GB LPCAMM2 LPDDR5X

· 2TB PCIe® 5.0 NVMe™ SSDs

· NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070 Laptop GPU - 12GB

· 16” 4k display

I’m not sure my response would be helpful. I have too many ‘favorite’ configs. Pretty much one for each ‘category’.

The FW16 Ryzen 7840HS w/ 16GB RAM and 1TB storage is my daily driver. I do use a 12 and 13 when I’m on the move (depending on the situation) and the Desktop as my house server.

This is my current daily driver with linux since March 2026:

Framework Laptop 13
System: AMD Ryzen 5 7640U
Display: 2.2K - Laptop bezel black
Memory: Crucial DDR5-5600 - 32GB (2 x 16GB)
Storage: WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe SSD - 500 GB
1 x USB-A (ver 2.0 - Aluminium - Silver)
3 x USB-C (Aluminum - Silver)

I choose this model as I wanted a laptop compatible with Linux. Also wanted a laptop that you I could repair and upgrade in the future.

I’ve got a sage laptop 12, with the core i5. 16gb of memory, 512gb of storage. I’ve got a rotating cast of expansion cards, but it’s currently 2x USB-C, 3x USB-A, Ethernet, DisplayPort, and SD card. Hoping to get the new fingerprint sensor, whenever it becomes available.

I use it for drawing, and am really hoping for a display upgrade at some point.

I suggest you add a template to this initial post to help your later data collection, and to make it clear what you mean by “configuration.”

Purchased
The main reason behind this configuration is that it is the only one I have experience with (with some minor changes in OS and expansion cards over the years). The base spec choices were made to balance budget and performance. I also knew that I was not going to be doing anything too computationally heavy on it since I have a desktop for that kind of thing.

Format CPU Memory Storage OS Expansion Cards
13" i5-1135G7 DDR4-3200 - 8GB (1 x 8GB) 500GB - WD_BLACK SN750 NVMe Bring Own (Devuan Debian Linux) USB-C x1

Might want Eventually
I don’t know if I ever would buy this, but If I were to buy another laptop, I would probably get a 12" with moderate specs since I like the idea of a more portable laptop with fair specs.
