Cooling isn't working, and charging results in overheating

Hello,

I’m on Laptop 13_AMD Radeon 760M_Windows 11 and it seems I have cooling issues.

When charging temperature raise, it smells like over heating machine, and I can’t hear at all fans spinning.

So I’m wondering if there is a process to check cooling fonctionality ?

Thank you all.

I’d start with adding software to look at your temperature values. If you can install something, show us what it is telling you, and someone will advise. Modern mainboards have several temperature sensors, and it is a good idea to look at all of them.

Also, have a look at your CPU activity - something may be keeping your idle CPU level high. On a well-tuned machine it should be in the order of 5%.

Also, it may be worth checking that the fan cable is plugged in - I wonder if it has worked its way loose.

might even be worth taking it apart and doing a clean of anything and everything… be surprised how eager dust is to settle into every part

Thank you all.

:+1: I’m going to check first inside. Possibly dusty because of my work.

If it still smells heat I’ll try check CPU and temperature value as you tell Squiggler.

About charging cable, the transfo is always a too hot in my opinion, so I always keep an eye on, it happen to me before with another laptop, the transfo’s plastic litterally melt from over heating.

I keep yall in touch with picture if relevant.

If by transfo that is referring to transformer (aka power adapter, maybe this is a translation if English is not native for the OP)

If that is getting it enough to melt then that is a garbage adapter. Neither the adapter nor the cable should get hot enough to melt or deform.

Heat = resistance and inefficiency

Some is ok, too hot to touch or melting is just poor quality. Along with dust, high ambient temperatures can also affect performance.

P.S. welcome to the community @Ashell !

Thanks Pkunk,

It was a decade ago and obviously garbage adapter (thanks for vocabulary, I couldn’t figure how to tell this piece, am french so I tried french word XD).

I use to keep my laptops so long that official replacement accessories couldn’t be found easely or super high cost XD so I bought what was available.

Anyway I swich to Framework machin for 2 years now.

So I open up and clean up dust which was less than expect. Last charging didn’t heat the machine that much so I keep an eye on let you in touch If I still have cooling issues :eyes:

On Windows you can use HWINFO to check the CPU temps. If the power is low but the temps are high, the cooling is insufficient. If dust isn’t the problem, it’s likely the thermal paste has dried up. Repaste it with PTM7950

Bonjour @Ashell!

(That is about the extent of my French). Glad you are getting a long time of use our of your machines. If you are looking for a quality aftermarket charger, Anker stuff is good quality and can be inexpensive.

Even their little 30W chargers will still charge the Framework 13 just fine and should be able to keep up with everyday use except for maybe heavy gaming or rendering//compiling.

@Charlie_6 is right that downloading HWINFO will show the current temps and the fan speeds. There is a ton of data that comes up so scrolling through the list to find what you are looking for might be necessary. Sometimes the fan is barely audible even at full speed for some people to hear. Putting the back of a hand by the vent can help detect the heat and airflow coming from the device. I hope this translates into French ok for you. Let us know how it turns out.
