The product pictures for the PSU on the Overtek site show some wires and a controller coming out of the fan, but the wider view of the fully assembled PSU do not show these wires coming out of the case, nor do the specs list any connections other than the ATX and CPU supply cables.
I just want to confirm that that picture is showing curious wiring visuals that are entirely inside the PSU and are not something you deal with while installing the unit. I’m planning on adding a front 80mm fan which will take up the existing extra fan header on the MB so I’d like to not have to contend for that connector should I also upgrade to the Overtek PSU.
Yes, the custom solution is 100% contained within the PSU, it is a drop-in replacement, you only connect a 24-pin and 8-pin to the motherboard, just like the original unit. No additional wiring is required.
I’m guessing by the activity on this thread now that quite a few of you have the new PSU or are thinking about one. I started the ball rolling on this and supplied the cable lengths to Jon at Overtek. He came up with the Noctua/PWM fan controller combo. I had the original test unit which is now back at Overtek to be taken to the same spec as what is now on sale. It is a 100% drop in replacement. Yes it is more expensive than Framework’s offering but it is a massive improvement. It is not silent but is to all intents and purposes inaudible. We ditch the restrictive fan duct as it’s no longer needed, liberating a ton of room at the front of the case for cabling and airflow. The small bracket at the rear of the original PSU can be unscrewed if you want and used as an additional anchorage for the new PSU, but don’t attempt to screw it to the new PSU, there is no corresponding hole on the casing. It can be screwed to the computer case using the original screw and the foam pads on the inside of the bracket will hold everything in place nicely. Here are a couple of pictures of my installation to illustrate this.
I just received mine, installed it no problem. In the environment where I have my Framework Desktop I can’t hear the new PSU, so this is great. As others said, a drop-in replacement. I did force-screw the bracket into the new PSU though. I didn’t read this whole thread until after the fact
I was contemplating this option, but ended up gambling on the HDPlex GaN 250W instead. That option isn’t a drop-in replacement and comes with some compromise, but for me it was totally worth it (I’ve posted my experience in the linked thread). I’m an oddity who really cares about silence, and for me the trade-off was extremely worth it, but I’m glad this option exists as a drop-in upgrade for normal people to ditch the horrid stock PSU’s fan.
