I think the original author of this thread is no longer around in the Framework community, but this module is something we absolutely need. RS232 serial is still very common in the data center!
Part of me would like to see a smaller connector at the laptop side, but I’m not sure a standard exists for this. In networking we have RJ45 wired for serial, but that’s no smaller than the existing DB9 connector so we might as well stick with what exists…

Well, as I have said in other discussions on this forum, why not just use an RS232-USB converter cable? That is all that is in the expansion card, and you need a cable between the laptop and other equipment, so why not just use a USB-serial cable? It then saves having an over size lump on the side of the laptop as well.
That then leaves a USB-A connector for other uses at other times (such as a USB memory stick to archive the collected data) when not requiring the serial connection.

I have successfully made a few prototypes. I ordered the wrong thickness PCB initially so I had to made some modifications to the case. but I did get them working successfully. If each person who is interested can message me directly with your quantity, depending on how in demand they are I will try to order a bulk batch in a few weeks. These ones will have the correct PCB thickness. I’m targeting $35 each with free shipping in the US.

Well of course you’re right. But I love the aesthetic. Plus, I have lots of old gear that use custom cables terminating in RS232 DE-9 (now not sure if male or female, given the discussion at the top of this thread - anyway the one without the pins) that can plug right into the expansion card connector. And the card is smaller and more convenient than a USB to RS232 cable.

Yeah this is obviously the way to get work done day to day but the point of the modular system is that you can have any port and I want my 2025 laptop to have DB9 serial!
