Deciding which one to buy

Hi Folks,

Looking to buy a Framework 13 before RAM sends prices even more through the roof & I am trying to decide which configuration I should get. I’ve had a look & can’t see any recent posts on this so thought I would ask.

Usage: I plan to do DIY edition & will install Fedora with KDE as my software (currently running with this on my very old laptop & love it). Generally I’ll be using it for very light tasks like web surfing, emails, document making e.t.c. I would like to get a version that will be future proofed for a long time so feeling bottom spec processors might not be the wisest choice (correct me if I’m wrong). I’m hoping this will be the last laptop I need to buy & can just replace parts for the rest of time!

I would like to know:

  • Should I get the newest AMD or save & get older intel or AMD versions

  • If I get older versions does the hardware it comes with (i.e. screen chassis also go back a generation)

  • What processor would you recommend from the lineups available?

  • Is there a newer Framework version on the horizon I should hold out for?

  • Saw some comments saying don’t buy storage & ram from Framework as it is cheaper elsewhere. I am from Aus and had a look around online. Can’t seem to see many places that sell it cheaper. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to look?

For your stated needs I’d go with the FW13” fitted with an Intel CPU, and I’d also suggest having a good look at the FW12”. Either one with 16Gb memory.

I suggest the Intel over AMD, because… I’ve been reading these FW forum posts for about 2 years, and my casual observation is that the Intel based systems are less troublesome running Linux.

Like you my needs are lightweight, pretty much the same app set as you. I run Debian/Windows dual boot, used to run Fedora/Windows. Why Windows? so I can run Adobe Lightroom. I’ve run this set up on both 12” and 13” Framework models. Currently I use the 12”, another family member uses the 13”. Both units are set up the same–the base Intel CPU that FW offers, 16Gb memory, 1Tb SSD. I’ve had zero trouble with either config. The 12” is about 4 months old, the 13” is coming up on 18 mos.

Happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

Rod

Thanks for your tips mate! I appreciate that good to know about the Intel working better with Linux! I’ll probably get “13 as if like a bit extra screen!
