Hi all,

I have a Framework Laptop 13 Pro (Core Ultra X9 388H, DIY Edition) on pre-order and I am bringing my own SSD. I would like to know whether the 13 Pro chassis accepts double-sided M.2 2280 drives.

On the previous Framework Laptop 13 generations, the forum reports about 1.5 mm of clearance under the drive, and double-sided SSDs fit. The 13 Pro is a new chassis and mainboard, and I could not find this documented anywhere.

The drives I am considering:

- Lexar NM1090 Pro 4TB (PCIe 5.0, double-sided)
- Samsung 9100 PRO 8TB (PCIe 5.0, double-sided)

My questions:

1. Is there clearance for components on the bottom side of the SSD in the 13 Pro, and how much?
2. Is there a thermal pad or any other part under or over the M.2 slot that could get in the way?
3. Has anyone with a 13 Pro installed a double-sided drive, and did it fit without bending?
4. For those running a PCIe 5.0 drive in the 13 Pro: how are temperatures and throttling under sustained load?

An answer from Framework staff, or a photo of the M.2 area with a measurement, would be very helpful.

Thanks!

There is some information here: [Important notice for installing double-sided SSDs & avoiding SSD heat-spreaders](https://knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us/important-notice-for-installing-double-sided-ssds-and-avoiding-ssd-heat-spreaders-intel-core-ultra-series-3-HkiJisJBGe)

From other threads (and the link in previous comment here), yes it will physically fit but as PCIe 5 SSD tend to get really hot, you might be better with equivalent PCIe 4 SSD, there are more high capacity single side options, like the older 4 TB Samsung 990 pro.

Heat related throttling will likely kill the v5 performance gain in normal operations.
