If it’s possible, I’d love to see modules that double up on the inputs, i.e. two usb ports, hdmi+display port, etc. There seems to be a lot of wasted real estate that could be put to use.

Unfortunately this turns out to be very hard. There is space, just very little of it.

There is development ongoing, there are multiple threads in this forum if you are curious but as I said, it turns out to be a lot more complicated than it looks.

Well as soon as you do something else than just passing a signal through, that real estate suddenly becomes pretty small actually 
. Especially splitting things up always involves some ICs that take up a relatively large area and often need additional circuitry to operate. As long as you don’t use relatively expensive manufacturing techniques that space is used up pretty quickly.
