eGPU support?

@Johan_John_Joji
Sure thing. DCS on 1440p runs steady 60 FPS and 70-80 FPS on 1080p.
Didn’t notice any stuttering or lags in a 15min session.

I’m also using the eGPU with my notebooks or with my mac mini.
It is so easy to connect only one cable and have your peripherals all connected to the notebook from the eGPU-Enclosure

For doing so the Razer Core X Chroma is great
And the
European ONLY Mantiz MZ-03 Saturn Pro eGPU V2 (mymantiz.com)
has an even more satisfying feature set.
Radiator Support for Liquid Cooling SATA Connectors and space for really large GPU’s

You should write the Datarate to the spezification and if eGPUs are supported.
In Addition to that it would be nice to now if the BIOS has the possibiliy to
disable the Kernel DMA protection so that the eGPU can be accessed during boot.

Mostly it helps if it is possible to disable the virtualization support.

Heya, other people with a Framework laptop!

So… I’ve been trying to get my GeForce 1060TI to work with an eGPU on my Framework 13 (Intel version, runs on Windows 11 Home Edition). Have been trying for days, literally, and… Well; nothing. Changed out all the drivers, new BIOS, the works.

Sometimes, I can see it recognize the eGPU (Razer Core X), but only in the Boot menu of the BIOS, but never the card. When I plug it in, it tells me my Thunderbolt ports may have limited functionality (tried all ports), but all the answers the link it provides gives me is that the computer is just not Thunderbolt-ready. But… It should be; there’s people here running an eGPU with card plug-and-play.

I’ve contacted FrameWork support, but they ended up sending me here. Is there anyone who knows what’s up, what nobs to fiddle (and where to find them) or do I just… Have to try to sell my stuff and build me a desktop?

The topic’s a year old, but… Well; here goes nothing!

It means there is no TB3 connection to the case. Same would happen if you used a USB2 cable to connect to the Core X. So there must be some defect or bug with the connection.

Also, which Intel generation. There are 3 already, about to be 4. And 11th gen for example was never TB4 certified and is acknowledged to not pass certification. So that in particular could have more bugs with connecting to any specific eGPU enclosure with any specific cable, if those components work on other hosts with TB3.

The first step for a working connection would be the USB4 panel in Windows showing the Core X as a connected device. If that does not happen / you get the popup you described, it is the TB3 connection that fails already. Nothing else matters at this point. It would only be about the mainboard of the Core X that houses the TB3 controller, the FW mainboard and the connection in between.

Thank you for your response!

I’ve got a 13th generation Intel Core.

I did see the Razer Core X pop up in the boot menu of the BIOS once. But only once, and there was no mention of an NVIDIA card anywhere…
Is it then likely a hardware problem with my motherboard or the connectors?

Thanks again for your response, I really appreciate it!

I do not know why it would show up in the boot menu, as it does not contain a bootable drive unless you put an SSD instead of a GPU inside it. So that should be very irrelevant to what works and what does not, unless the BIOS explicitly tells you that it negotiated a TB3 connection to it. And even that would be irrelevant, as the OS can also do that.

And 12th gen does not show anything of the sort, nor does any other of my TB hosts.
So I’d ignore that and concentrate on what Windows or Linux reports on actual TB3/USB4 connections. And if the OS does not show a working connection or an error message (maybe Event Log in Windows, specifically pertaining to the USB4 controllers or TB3 connection), then the problem will happen below that and again, each device and the cable should be checked if they work with other devices.

It was in the same list as other peripherals, so I probably just chose my description poorly.

This has happened before with another (cheap second-hand) eGPU. I chalked it down to it being that product’s fault.

I will contact support again, this time about the warranty of the mainboard and the expansion card. Thanks so much!

I’m thinking about getting the framework 13 laptop. I want to use it for work and gaming so I’m wondering if it supports external GPU docks so I can use my GPU with it

Which dock do you want to use and which model would you buy?

Did you read any of this thread that you posted on? Your question is answered many times. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think that comment was merged, so maybe he just didn’t search first.

ahh, good to know

I’m so terribly sorry for not taking hours to read a very long thread I quickly skimmed over and didn’t realize Thunderbolt 4 was backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3. next time I just won’t bother posting in the community. You could have just said my question was already answered
