Expansion Bay Creeking/Wobble?

I’ve noticed recently that my expansion bay (non-gpu) will move a bit when I’m grabbing my 16 out of my backpack; when I flip the laptop over and press down on the front corners of the expansion bay, it will move in and out a bit and one side makes an audible creek when pressed.

This annoyed me.

So, I spent the morning figuring out how to make this area firm. I ended up settling on shimming the bottom of the little nubs at the front of the expansion bay using some offcuts of a dbrand skin. I used two layers on the outside nubs and one layer on the inside nubs. The inside shims probably weren’t needed since they are next to the support screws, but I didn’t think about that until after it was installed.

Anyway, after shimming and reassembling, the expansion bay now feels firm, like it’s part of the whole chasis instead of and additional part.

Anyway, I thought y’all might want to know this is possible if you have the same problem and it bothers you, as well as to see if anyone has experienced the same.

P.S. Some orientation notes: front/back/top/bottom are referring to the orientation of the expansion bay when installed in the 16 and in normal use, thus the “back” is where any connectors would be if there were any, the “front” is where the internal pcie connector is, the “bottom” is the outside metal part of the case and the “top” is where the fans and expansion board are.

Mine is actually extremely tight, but having disassembled/assembled it a few times as part of repasting, I notice it can be really hard to get into the slot correctly. A lot of times I can get it in not actually aligned, I notice by seeing the line of the chassis against the bay bottom bumper isn’t straight, so some part of the bay isn’t slotted into it’s housing right.

Once mine is slotted in correctly, I can’t budge or wiggle it at all, I’d probably break it in half before I feel any shift.

Do you perhaps have the dedicated gpu installed? I don’t remember this problem when I had the gpu installed; I’ve only noticed it since I installed the dual m.2 adapter.

It’s also possible that they have better tolerances in newer parts… mine is from Batch 2. Do you have a more recent one?

Also I’m certain that it’s installed/aligned correctly.

It is a GPU version. Mine was a pretty early batch, I’ve not tried any other extensions though…
Could be a difference in the more recent tolerances, that’s true. Maybe someone who’s gotten extension bays could comment
