Framework 12 and Fedora KDE

Hello Framework Community.

I just got my framework 12 this week. I love the machine and the hardware. It’s been very nice.

I’m coming from a Thinkpad running Fedora KDE which I am very comfortable with.
That being said, I wanted to make sure things worked well, so I stuck to the Fedora Workstation on the 12.

I do miss KDE. It’s by no means a deal breaker but does anyone have any experience with the KDE distro running on their 12’s? Touch screen and what not working ok?

If it seems like it would work, I would jump back to KDE. If not, I have tried my best to get a similar setup on workstation, but it’s not quite there yet.

Either way, I’m glad I have this great machine going. Trying my best not to order even more of the cards!

One approach is to get a small/cheap NVMe drive, and install something else, and see how you get on with it. You can then try another distro, and if it doesn’t work out, just swap back to your original drive. I can see 128GB drives on eBay UK for around £10 delivered!

That’s my Plan B. I’m hoping someone had a locked good or bad verdict to save some cash. Looking like it would be about $60 American for me with what I have access to and would trust.

The nice thing is that even with the eh workstation, I really do love the machine!

Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop is fully supported on the Framework 12. In fact, it’s the edition that is installed when you order a Framework 12 pre-built with Fedora. I’m not sure where you got the impression that Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop would be any less supported than Fedora Workstation.

Thank you!

I followed the guide (Fedora 43 Installation on the Framework Laptop 12 - Framework Guides) and that left me with the impression I needed Workstation not KDE.

Very exciting!

I have Fedora 44 KDE on mine and having absolutely no hardware related issues or quirks (other than spotty suspend, but that’s a given on any non-macbook). Highly recommend.

Thanks. I found that I can run KDE and workstation. I’m having trouble with the keyboard working in tablet mode, but that’s something I can tweak or even just live with.

Super thankful for everyone’s suggestions!

I’m on Fedora 44 KDE and everything works great!

For the virtual keyboard issue you mentioned, double check in KDE’s system settings that the selected virtual keyboard is the Plasma Keyboard rather than Maliit (this is the old one that could be buggy).

Also, if you have problems with keyboard/trackpad not working after switching back from tablet mode, the easiest way to resolve that is to just close the lid to put it to sleep then open it back up again.
