Framework 13 AMD 7040 Battery Drain

Hi all,

I recently got my Framework 13 AMD 7040 laptop, and it has had a constant battery drainage issue ever since.

After searching online, I found some people had luck with a firmware upgrade (I’m now on the latest release), and that did help a bit. Where it seemed to drain completely in under six hours (when powered off, not in sleep/hibernate), it now at least holds a charge for 8+ hours when powered off.

However, there is still a significant power drain while the laptop is turned off. After booting back up, the power draw reports 7-8W, then gradually goes back down to 4.4-4.5W. This happens with expansion cards (4 USB-C ports) plugged in, and with no expansions plugged in.

What could possibly be causing such a power draw when the machine is completely off?!

The laptop, even if it is charging the RTC battery while powered off, should be drawing less than a watt. It should be able to hold a serviceable charge for a week+, not go to 0% after less than 24 hours.

Please let me know if this is going to be addressed in the next firmware release, or if anyone has tried the coreboot release for the board (that’s going to be my next attempt).

Thanks for anyone that can help with this issue, and for taking the time to read this post.

If I can get coreboot running on the machine, I’ll report back with results.

I really hope it’s not a hardware issue, as I otherwise really love the laptop.
