Framework 13 keyboard stickers

Hello, I bought two years ago a Framework 13 with an english keyboard.

Now I would like to switch to an italian keyboard (45€) but I am considering cheaper options like using stickers.

Any brand that would recommend?

Is 14x14mm size good? Or should it be 15x15?

Switching from an English to an Italian layout via stickers is a popular “budget” move, but because the Framework 13 has a backlit keyboard, the type of sticker you choose makes a huge difference in the final look.

1. The Size: 14x14mm vs. 15x15mm

The Framework 13 keycaps are approximately 15mm x 15mm, but they have a slight “dish” (concavity) and rounded corners.

  • Recommendation: Use 14x14mm (or even 13x13mm).

  • Why? If you use 15x15mm, the sticker will likely overhang the curved edges of the key, causing it to peel almost immediately. A slightly smaller sticker sits flat in the center “well” of the key and lasts much longer.

2. Recommended Brands/Types

Since you have a premium laptop, I suggest avoiding the generic paper stickers. Look for these specific types:

  • Keyshorts (Premium Choice): They are famous for custom-sized laptop stickers. You can actually find “Framework Laptop” specific sets on their site. They offer transparent options so the original backlight still shines through the letter.

  • 3M Vinyl (Matte Finish): Look for “Non-Transparent Matte Italian Keyboard Stickers.” The matte finish matches the texture of the Framework keys better than glossy ones, which feel greasy after a few hours of typing.

  • Fluorescent/Glow-in-the-dark: If you work in low light, these are great, but they will completely block your keyboard’s built-in backlight.

3. The “Backlight” Problem

Standard Italian stickers are opaque (black with white letters). If you apply these:

  1. Your Italian letters will not glow.

  2. The English letters underneath will be hidden.

  3. The “glow” from the keyboard will only seep out from the edges of the keys.

The “Value” Verdict

Stickers usually cost €10–€15 for a high-quality set. Given that a brand-new, factory-perfect Italian Input Module from Framework is €45:

  • Stickers: Save €30, but lose the backlight functionality and deal with “sticker feel” under your fingertips.

  • New Keyboard: Pay the extra €30 for a permanent, backlit, and native Italian typing experience (plus you keep the English one as a spare!).

thanks……..
