Not sure if this is the right topic, still gonna try it though.
I’m about to get myself one of those great Framework laptops. For now, I’m still struggling whether to go with a Framework 13 Pro or a Framework 16.
On one hand, the Framework 13 Pro seems to be a bit more up-to-date with hardware specs, on the other hand the screen’s actually a bit too small for me. Moreover, the power consumption of the Framework 13 Pro appears to be about half of the Framework 16’s in energy saving mode (15W vs 30W).
What matters most to me:
- energy efficiency / battery life
- upgradability
- hardware up-to-dateness
- touchscreen functionality (which is not implemented in Framework 16 so far, I know)
- CachyOS!
Is there anyone here who can just share some of their experiences with both of the Framework laptop types so far to make me un-lose my mind about deciding which one is the right one?
Cheers.
The 13 pro satisfies all your desires, get that one.
You don’t want gaming, better ai, high end 3d model design, adjustable input modules, 2 internal nvme plus expansion Bay… So don’t get the 16.

Well cheers, you’re probably right. Guess it’s not all about the size, is it?
I have a Batch 1 FW 16 with the dGPU running plain Arch since Day 1 and now have a Batch 8 Preorder for the FW 13 Pro, where I’m currently undecided and plan to try a couple of distros and DEs.
I originally bought the 16 for the screen size, dGPU and upgradability and mainly for development and gaming when not at home. But I have to say that while gaming on the 16 is great, I rarely had that use-case in practice. Nowadays, I mostly use it for development and dabbling in graphics programming while stationary at my desk.
After a lot of consideration, I wanted a lighter and smaller (aka more mobile) laptop with better battery life for non-gaming, light dev work and media consumption again. While battery life on the 16 is not terrible, is not particularly great (2-3 hours of YT max and less when compiling), Framework claims 20 hours of Netflix streaming for the 13 Pro.
Both FW 16 and 13 Pro are and will be upgradable, but the 13 Pro is the most recent 13, so there is currently nothing to upgrade to
Since you stated “energy efficiency / battery life” as your top priority and “touch-screen functionality”, you should get the 13 Pro. In my quick “research” before ordering mine, I found that a Panther Lake model will probably have better battery life than an AMD equipped one.
