Framework 13 + Ryzen: USB-C port 2 (bottom-left) appears dead

I have a problem with my Framework 13 with Ryzen that I got ~2 months ago.

Port 2 (bottom-left according to this page) stopped responding to any expansion cards/devices plugged to it. I noticed this first time with 250GB expansion card, when I had:

  • Port 1 (USB-C)
  • Port 2 (USB-A card)
  • Port 3 (250GB card)
  • Port 4 (HDMI card).

I followed this with experiments:

  1. With USB-C 250GB: expansion card, the disk stopped showing up when plugged into this port.
  2. Charging via USB-C expansion card: I don’t get any notification about charging when I plug charger cable into it. Doesn’t work.
  3. Charging without any expansion card: doesn’t work.

The way I diagnose it not responding is:

  • dmesg --clear
  • I plug things in and out
  • dmesg
  • I see nothing changing in the dmesg buffer.

Any other ideas on what else to try? I worry that the mainboard has a problem with this port.

Hm. I worry that I might be experiencing same symptoms mentioned here:

However in my case, I didn’t find a way to unstuck the port.

I would recommend contacting support if you haven’t already. If your laptop is only 2 months old it will still be under warranty if a hardware swap is necessary, but they will also be able to diagnose the issue and help you with troubleshooting.

If the port doesn’t work at all, for none of the expansion cards, it’s definitely a different problem (for me and all the other people who wrote about the same problem, it only affected the USB-A card and on both left ports, not only bottom-left, and it came back when re-plugged).

However, if it’s not working at all, you should definitely open a support ticket and ask there for help.
