Framework 16, docking stations and power supply

Hi all,

I currently have a Framework 13. I’m considering upgrading to a Framework 16 with a beefy graphics card, potentially sucking in 240W.

One issue is that not a single docking station provides that much power at the moment. ‘No problem’, I thought to myself. ‘When I want to game, I’ll attach my Framework 240W charger to the main port and attach the dock to another port. No big deal.’

My question is: is this possible? Will the two chargers not interfere? Will my Framework 16 select the most powerful charger and NOT the docking station one? And finally (but this might come down to my specific Archlinux setup) will the docking station work with external screens on other USB C ports than the main one?

Cheers,

Sam

Simply connect the dock without a power source, the dock will get 5V from the laptop

Yeah, it’ll work as you expect. The FW16 will identify the highest power charger and use that. I’ve tested this with secondary chargers up to ~100W, and the intended charger has always been selected.

Note: It will not pull power from more than 1 charger at a time.

+1 on both working at the same time, also there are 240w docks out there (I have one and they are not cheap)
