Framework 16 Gen 2 Top Cover

Has anyone upgraded their gen 1 framework 16 with the new top cover that’s supposed to be more rigid? Was curious how big of a difference it actually made, and if the upgrade was worth it. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the build quality of a MacBook Pro anytime I use one for work. I’m not expecting that level of rigidity from something that is as modular as a framework, but curious just how much of an improvement it is.

Edit: It made me put sub categories, these seem the closest to relevant but still seem pretty irrelevant

I upgraded my gen 1 to gen 2 a month or so ago when I realized it was kinda causing my screen to really smash into my keyboard while in a bag due to flex and can say that it certainly gets rid of most of the flex the gen 1 had because by god did the gen 1 flex. however not sure if I can say the upgrade was worth 140 dollars to be honest. I would say it certainly improved the build quality and that if they introduced a single piece touch pad without the need for spacers all my build quality issues would be fixed with the 16.

I have my fingers crossed that they announce the single piece trackpad they’ve been teasing at their next gen event in a few days. That would also improve one of my few quality issues with the laptop.

Does it improve the flex when you open the lid? That’s where I notice it most. If they fix the flex in the lid, the trackpad spacers, and the speakers, I could live with the crappy webcam and battery life.

oh yeah it massively fixes the lid flex

I recall showing the Framework to a friend and going “what are you doing?!” when he opened the laptop grabbing it by the corner.

Truth be told a good part of that flex comes from the lid being pretty tightly screwed in. Then again modern MacBooks are also way more rigid than back in the Intel days.

I missed the announcement about the 2nd gen lid and now I’m tempted to pull the trigger on it, as it might prevent something worse that’s happened to every laptop I’ve owned: pressure marks on the screen.

Yeah, even if you have to make a small adjustment to the angle of the screen, I do it from one of the sides, not from the middle of the top, so the flex worries me sometimes.

My mainboard just spontaneously died on my 16. I’m going to wait for this next gen event and see what they announce, but I’ll probably end up ordering a new top cover in addition to a new mainboard
