Framework 16 7840HS, just out of warranty.
Now no usb, no charge, even after disconnecting battery and letting it sit with no battery. No usb. Soon the battery charge will run out, and it will become a brick.
cant afford a new mainboard, guess I’ll have to part it out…
sad
have you tried to disconnect battery in bios, left if for 1o r2 minutes without attached power cord and then attach power cord. There were some reports realted to the latest bios 4.04 that charging stop works, and resetting EC helps
May also need a mainboard reset. There have been a few cases of this happening where the EC shuts down one or both sides of the USB ports hence no charging or devices respond. Main board reset and disconnecting the battery has helped some.
There have also been a few people posting their Framework Laptop 16 mainboards for sale after upgrading to the new AMD chips. That would be less expensive than replacing the main board new. Just a thought.
thanks for your reply, how do I reset the main board? I have tried removing the battery for 12 hours already with no luck. buying a used main board is a good idea I will look thank you
if you disconnected battery and power cord for more than 1 minute, you have already reseted EC.
There was some additional procedure to reset mainboard with some switch on the board but I cannot find it in knowledgebase. I found only this instruction How to Reset the Mainboard in your Framework Laptop 16 - iFixit Repair Guide which match to what I remember, but I do not think that it will help if none of the usb port works.
Have you tried remove all cards (usb-a, usb-c etc and attach power cord directly to the usb-c port in mainboard?
I know that you are out of the warranty, but still maybe support may help you with some additional ideas.
yes I tried removing all USB cards, when I select battery disconnect in the bios, it will wake the laptop up again once I plug power into the left middle port. however it will not charge from this port once the laptop has started and it won’t wake the laptop up from any other port and it will not charge from any port at all…
Being as the board still responds to power input it still would be worth it to try and reset the main board by following the guide linked above. Then disconnect the battery and see if it possibly reinstates the ports to work again or possibly the charging circuitry. Otherwise there is likely a hardware fault on the board that only a repair or replacement is going to fix.
Just trying to think of ways to help ressurect the board without having to repair or replace it.
Thanks for your reply, I did the mainboard reset today , pressing the midplate switch 10 times and then got green flashing lights, but still no USB charge. I think that confirms it’s dead
What was connected to the usb ports just before the problem happened?
Did you update the BIOS close to when the problem happened?
Reason being, it might be a usb device that caused it to break.
Reason being, if the Bios updates, but for some reason the EC failed to update, or the usb chip firmware failed to update, the charging might not work.
Problem being, don’t try the bios update again as it needs power adapter plugged in an working to succeed.
I think that probably the best approach is to send the mainboard to a local repair shop. Maybe a component has failed on the board.
only thing plugged in was official framework charger, the BIOS wasn’t being updated when the problem happened.
