Since DDR5 prices are sky rocketing, would it make sense for framework to release a DDR4 version of Framework 16?
For example an AMD board with 5600F processor that was released in 2025?
I want to upgrade my Framework 13 to 16 and I have a 64GB DDR4 kit in it that I bought recently for a very good price and I still have my old 16GB kit that I originally bought with my laptop so I can give my 13 with original RAM to my mom
That is a socketed processor intended for desktop applications, it would not be usable in an FW16 chassis.
The goal is understandable given the pricing situation, but even if there is a suitable processor it would be a gigantic engineering effort to create a new mainboard for it.
I suspect that if DDR4 is less expensive right now, itโs likely just because there is stock around and not a ton of demand. But I doubt very much DDR4 is being produced currently, so if companies started to switch to it, I suspect the supply would quickly dry up, and the price of DDR4 would start to shoot up too.
I could be completely wrong. But thatโs my guess.
