The Framework 60W GAN charger is very nice bit of kit. Very compact, and quite efficient.
However, it has absolutely atrocious power factor, of 0.5 to 0.6. Yeah it pull 60W, but it pull 90VA (“apparent watts”) from the wall. This leads to quite a bit of heat.
What about the 100W and 240W? I think regulation force you to have PFC, but. Are we doing the same old “delete PFC to make charger smaller” trick?
No! GAN doesn’t automatically make chargers superior. GAN is just better MOSFET, so you can run them much faster.
Higher frequency means a smaller core, so you can shrink the magnetic core still. which shrink the charger and make it lighter.
In case you are looking for alternatives, Lenovo make some pretty decent 65W and 100W units. They are not as small, and they are not necessarily GaN. But they have PFC, too. And. surprise, they dont get nearly as hot.
