Framework Camera Tuning

Hey all!

Love my Framework 13 Pro, and I noticed the camera was terrible in video calls. My job and personal life call for a lot of video calls so this wasn’t acceptable to me.

I spent some time (and some tokens) to build out a small ISP pipeline that calibrates for your face based on the output from your phone (assuming the phone baseline is acceptable).

The Cheese webcam app for Linux has a Preferences setting which allows you to fine tune the brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue of the web camera. Changing the webcam settings with Cheese will allow you to improve the video quality of the camera’s images in other applications that utilize the webcam.

I don’t know if the webcam settings made using Cheese would be saved by the webcam hardware. If they are, it might be possible to boot up your computer with a Live Linux CD, install Cheese, set the webcam settings to your preferences and then return to Windows with the webcam settings retained by the camera. I don’t use Windows, so I can’t test this hypothesis.

Interesting project and nice to see a use of the NPU on Linux.

I was too tired to do it last night and it had already taken the better part of an hour.
