Framework Desktop: Copilot PC or not? For Recall etc

I have been trying to find out if FW Desktop is copilot+ PC or if it can be made to function as a copilot+ PC. In particular, I would like to be able to use the Recall feature, amongst others. Now, I have enabled Windows Insider Program, and kept the OS updated.

Am I missing something, do I need to wait more to be offered this feature, is the FW team working on it, has someone successfully managed to get Win11 Recall on their FW desktop, or is it even possible?

And yes, I am aware of Recall’s potential privacy issues/risks, but this query is more about the possibility of getting it on my FW desktop.

Any insights/leads will be appreciated

As far as I can tell–this is just Microsoft not having their butts together. Which-New Outlook hasn’t had spellcheck working for over 2 years now. Microsoft is too big to care.

Then there’s the reality that all these hardware requirements and lockouts in the W11 era…are artificial market segmentation, and that is before SoCs like Strix Point with massive shared-memory pools running faster than most non-Apple consumer PCs out there. People have gotten Recall working on unsupported hardware. But that is bad for Microsoft’s business. So they, Microsoft, impose these lockouts.

Also…if you’re curious, Microsoft has onerous licensing requirements. There’s a reason all the ads for “Copilot+PC” branded devices all look so similar on Dell’s or HP’s or Amazon’s store fronts….Microsoft is pulling an Nvidia:

So we can’t say for sure if FW Desktops Win11 users will be locked out of Recall etc. features - or not? Do you have FW desktop and does it offer Recall?

This is great if true, sounds like device itself must be marketed as ‘Copilot + PC’ exclusively to get all the AI features like Recall.

I know there is been fearmongering about Microsoft turning on the feature silently and acting as spyware without your explicit consent.

I use Linux and LMStudio for all my AI needs.

Digging into the whole Recall thing….It looks like Microsoft has decided to block it on all desktops? The people who got it working–did so on older preview builds–before they yanked the feature due to all the security problems with it….

Recall, as it is now, requires Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security–which means a hardware camera, that meets the Win Hello requirements. Maybe that requirement will change in the future–but the ball is squarely in MS’s court on this, Framework can do nothing.

The whole thing is contingent on ESS being enabled–IDK if it can, I’m guessing you can’t turn ESS on? I don’t have a Win image on my FD to test.

Official statement on the Win Experience Blog about it.

Cameras like Logitech Brio (which I have) fulfil the requirements for ‘Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security’ feature. I have to find out about the ESS being enabled or not, any further input in this regard will be appreciated

The most important and relevant information being: Originally planned for October, Recall will now be available for preview with Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs by December.

Check the last link in my previous post, it has info on enabling the rube-goldberg of ESS, if you can…or fake-enabling it via registry (beware doing thing..regedits can ruin things). They basically made ESS so only Tier 1 OEMs stamping out thousands of prebuilts/day, with only W11 preinstalled, would ever bother.

Link repeated below:

“Your computer must have VBS with Device Guard Enablement and TPM 2.0 along with biometric sensors and drivers with ESS. On the other hand, it should have device firmware with a Secure Devices (SDEV) ACPI table.”

Do you have Bitlocker enabled? Are you authenticating with Windows Hello? These seem to be min requirements. Also, check policies

You may want to read this thread as it has some applicability to all Copilot+ PCs. There’s plenty of ambiguity around what a Copilot+ PC is exactly - does it HAVE to have a bult in camera and/or fingerprint scanner for example? Another question is whether Framework has to develop specific drivers to enable Copilot+ features? And the last point is about the rollout schedule for each of the Copilot+ tools something that is happening by region and processor type.

I don’t have Recall, but I don’t use Bitlocker. I can use other tools like Paint cocreator and Click to Do which are both Copilot+ tools (apparently)
