If I install the Desktop Mainboard on a test bench, will a full size Video Card fit in the PCIE slot ?

Just thinking as I have an AMD brand new card that was to be a replacement in my old build that I have not gotten around to doing.

thanks

dan

The slot isn’t open ended so you’ll need a riser.

Is this what i need?

will the video card “fit” next to the cooler and Fan?

Am I missing some obvious issues with this? If so point them out to me.

It might make more sense to just buy a motherboard that supports a full size video card,

but I am trying to force this card (RX6800 ST) into a framework MB

thanks,

dan

Better to get a powered one with an extension cable as the board is a bit tight. The power plugs are right next to the PCIe port, the cables kind of get in the way.

thanks,

this is getting too complicated for me.

The GPU will just sit on the shelf

The PCIe slot is 4x and your brand new AMD card is probably 16x, so performance will not reach its max limit as in a desktop motherboard.

This GPU is actually not bad, it’s basically half a 7900XT with slower but more RAM. At some point the NPU might get driver upgrades that make it more useful too. If we take the usual sparse MoE LLM, the vast majority of memory is rarely read, and the always-read part is very small, so you can get significant acceleration by putting the always-active part on a faster card. This also lowers the duty cycle on the integrated graphics so your normal desktop activities are still usable. It’s a slightly awkward setup but hard to beat for the budget.

Worth keeping in mind prefill is quite important for coding agents, as using bash commands generate tremendous amounts of text to read in and editing files creates cache misses. Hence the happy DGX Spark owners.

If you are willing to pay more, I would go old server board + older AMD cards. 7900XTs and MI210s give you a lot of bang for the buck.
