Framework Laptop 16 Ryzen 7040 BIOS 4.01 Release BETA - Held

I have been on 4.01 for a few days now. Overall, I think it’s much better than prior versions.

Good:

  • power management while plugged in is improved (lower wattage supplies do not seem to glitch it out anymore).
  • gaming (dGPU) while plugged in is stable so far.
  • I have not had any failure to charge (that needs me to power off for 2 minutes to fix).
  • Feels like sleep parasitic power drain has been reduced.

Bad:

  • Gaming on battery is pretty much impossible - CPU speed toggles between locked at ~890MHz then to +2000MHz, causing terrible stuttering off and on. This did not happen before.
  • Incorrect CPU and GPU PROCHOT is flagged when external power is connected/disconnected or dGPU power state changes (on/off). Will only clear by a sleep/wake cycle. However, this does not appear to effect performance.
  • dGPU gets locked on (D0 state) when an external monitor was used. This used to happen back when the FW16 first released and was fixed at some point. Not sure why this returned, but it requires a reboot to restore proper dGPU sleep functionality again.

I had the usual battery issues where it seems to be mis-calibrated. Ran it all the way down and then charged back up to full overnight and that seemed to get it back to normal. Hopefully this issue was only a result of the bios upgrade and does not reoccur.

All-on-all it seems like some very annoying power bugs have been resolved, but at the same time some old ones have been brought back, which doesn’t make sense. I hope Framework can resolve those old bugs again and continue to improve the machine with the next bios update.
