Framework Mouse or Open Mouse discussion

Just to add to this, but as a left-handed person it is really difficult to find a good quality true ambi mouse that’s also repairable and sustainable.

Much of the high-end logitech stuff is either right-hand only or ‘ambi’ but having side buttons on the left hand size where I press them by accident.

…..so it would be really useful to have an actually decent mouse to use….!

Myself are very satisfied with my Logitech Anywhere 3. There are guides to change batteries that seams reasonable. I think it’s gonna last a long time. A mouse isn’t something that you upgrade. Mice aren’t that much of an problem in terms of electonic waste or becoming obsolete. In terms of the right to repair ethos there isn’t much to gain on a Framework mouse. It would be an product that is looking for an problem to fix.

How long have you had it?
I feel like I haven’t even had my current mouse that long & it has already needed replacement of the primary switches.

A mouse could last a very long time, but none of them seem made for that.

The Logitech Anywhere 3 uses regular switches for it’s primary buttons (left and right click). The contacts will wear and oxidize over time until they start malfunctioning. Double-clicking, and sometimes not registering clicks. Regular switches all inherently have a limited life.

Hmm. I think a mouse is a high volume item, low cost. It seems like a poor choice to make money on unless you can make a zinger and sell millions…
I used a Logitech sculptured right hand mouse for a long time, but now am using the Framework and one, soon to be two, additional older laptops.
So I sought out a similar shaped mouse and found one on Amazon I liked. (TECKNET Bluetooth Mouse, 4800 DPI Wireless Mouse, 2-Year Battery 6 Adjustable DPI, 6 Buttons)

It is $13.99. I bought 3. I like it, but am not fussy, and it is a bit large in a smaller laptop case.
I can’t see FrameWork making a mouse to compete with that price level. And then you have the Logitech mice, which are all pretty good and cheap enough, esp on a sale.

Your opinions and desires may differ…. but this is where I am at.

If that cheap amazon mouse is breaking so quickly you start by buying three of them, you’ll probably end up paying more then with one more expensive longlasting mouse (aka paying the poor tax). Also not environmentally friendly at all. Perfect example why a framework mouse would be great.

Additionally, it might be a good low risk way (compared to more complex categories like phones) to expand the ecosystem a and also get the framework name out a bit more.

P.S. alternatively, I might be interested in framework putting engineering work into a mouse that just doesn’t break, with a lifetime warranty. and maybe has easily exchangeable switches, for different preferences.

I think the main issue with mice is that they are insanely personal taste dependent, even moreso than laptops in general are and arguably even more than even keyboards, so pulling a one or 2 sizes fits all would be a mostly one size fits noone type deal.

There is also the point of even incredibly cheap mice these days being relatively good and also last a long time for most people.

They may currently be too busy trying to make fw 12 chasis that don’t break instantly XD

Also mouse switches are incredibly easy to change already, fortunately 99% of the market seems to be using the same form factor which is also very easy for even a beginner to hand solder, not sure doing hotplug sockets there would be a big improvement.

I’ll still argue for the framwork mouse :wink:
I’d say no matter how easy the soldering is, most people just shy away from it, also fear of voiding warranty. So there might still be a point for hotplug sockets.

And the form factors are exactly my point for a framework mouse. Try to create one board for which people can 3d-print whichever hull parts they like. Though it might be challenging, due to constraint where the switches are sitting and how many there are. Maybe they could have a library of 3d-printable versions, even 3d party resellers for those.

Not saying there isn’t I just think the hurdle there is quite small comparatively.

Doesn’t that already exist just not from framework?

Having a core board with just the sensor and the main electronics and then having a custom board added to that with switches and wheels and stuff does sound like a pretty solid idea.

I had that problem (clicks not registering) with a mouse of mine, never though about checking if it’s just a problem with the switches. Will definitely try if changing or repairing the switches will change anything!

Given the framework keyboard announcement today, having a mouse that could pair to the same dongles would be a big win. It would enable keyboard and mouse usage on the go while only taking up one expansion slot.

If the mouse had the same multi-connection support as the keyboard, it’d also eliminate my use of a hub. Instead I could just have a fab in my framework 13 and a fab in my framework desktop and switch them between channels
