I just started to have a simple script to reset usb.  
I.e. for my right “non-thunderbolt” usb:

echo -n “0000:c1:00.3” | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci\_hcd/unbind  
echo -n “0000:c1:00.3” | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci\_hcd/bind
