FW12 Calibration of touch panel for different aspect ratios

What are the solutions people are using to adjust the calibration of the touch panel upon changing to resolutions with different aspect ratios, like mirroring to an external display/projector that only offers 16:9 resolutions?

Gnome/Wayland does seem to have some features that should probably work, like “Map to Monitor” and “Keep Aspect Ratio” but they don’t work properly:

By default the screen seems properly calibrated for use with the full 16:10 screen, but when I switch to a 16:9 resolution, the stylus and touch are translated. One can fix that by using the “Calibrate” tool, but (as one would expect), this then needs to be redone if one changes back to 16:10.

Ideally, the “Map to Monitor/Keep Aspect Ratio” features of Gnome would be fixed so that the calibration does get adjusted properly. However, in absence of this we need a different solution.

The calibration is stored in gsettings under /org/gnome/desktop/peripherals/tablets/222a:5539/ area, so one can switch calibrations once one has figured out the calibration parameters.

Claude (with some help) was nice enough to write a python script that subscribes to D_Bus MonitorsChanged signals and then sets the calibration (from a supplied table) depending on the current resolution. Configuring this to start up as part of the session does give automatic calibration adjustment but it does require figuring out the calibration strings in the first place (it should be able to compute the required transformation!)

I’d be happy to share the script, but the solution is a bit hacky. It would be so much better if gnome/wayland would just adjust the calibration by itself upon resolution aspect ratio changes. Does someone know more about the calibration magic in gnome/wayland?

Assuming this is a Gnome or Wayland responsibility, could you raise a ticket with the appropriate project, attaching your script? They may not use the script, but it would illustrate the nature of the problem.

For devil’s advocacy, would there be an accuracy advantage if the user were to run Calibrate for every aspect ratio they need?
