I had already seen @junaruga’s thread for Batch 2, but didn’t see one for Batch 1, so here it is!
This thread is for people who pre-ordered the Framework Laptop 12 Core Series 3 as Batch 1!
I’ve been a longtime fan of Framework, and had already been eyeing the 12 as a replacement for my old 2018 iPad Pro, which will no longer be getting new software updates. Got the email about the Core Series 3 refresh yesterday, and decided it was the perfect excuse to pull the trigger.
Opted for the Core 3 304 (Sage Green of course) to save a little money, and since this machine will complement my Bazzite gaming rig and my Mac Mini.
ordered the 320 mainboard to upgrade my 12 that has a 1334U board
still waiting on the backlit KBs and FP reader buttons to hit the store so I can order those as well, I often use mine in low light conditions and my long ass password is a pain so better key visibility and the ability to press through the login screen is gonna be an amazing QoL bump
I ordered the moment I saw the email. Really love the form factor of the 12 and got one for my kid. Felt like now was as good a time as any. Really excited to replace the ancient laptop I always carry with me (along with it’s massive power brick) with this.
Hi, I am batch 1 for the fw12’s mainboard upgrade for the Core 5 320. I am excited for the benefits of this new board. I also plan to add the new fingerprint reader to the preorder if they allow.
I know this is off topic, but wow, really? Will it no longer get new OS versions, or did Apple stop providing even security updates? I thought they normally provided software updates longer than that, but maybe I’m just out of the loop on Apple’s practices.
On topic, I have been using a FW 12 as my daily use machine since they came out. I was excited by the prospect of increased battery life and hopefully less heat during light use with the machine on my lap. I wanted to go with the Core 3 304 due to price and because I don’t “need” more performance than that. But I didn’t want to risk being disappointed in the performance (my current FW 12 is the i5 1334u), so I went with the Core 5 320.
Good clarification! It will no longer be getting major software updates/releases. I don’t know specifics on Security Patches, but I agree with you, Apple is pretty good about patching major exploits on really old devices - I pulled out my old iPhone 8 the other day, and lo, it had a security update (a phone that came out in 2017!)
I’m not throwing the iPad away! It’s still the most color accurate screen in my house, so I’ll be used as a second screen for photo editing/etc
In principle, they are shipping in October—hopefully during the first week. The concern is that the casing crack issue doesn’t seem to have been resolved.
I’ll use it mainly for work, since it’s very comfortable, and as a tablet for watching content and browsing. Maybe also for playing less demanding games, like Football Manager.
