FW16: Shift / Enter key -> power dead, screen stripes

Story on how I fixed it, so others can learn :slight_smile:

Pressing Shift + Enter would either kill my laptop or create these crazy scary stripes.

This was pretty random. It would happen only sometimes. Quite rarely, making debugging annoying. A few times, it crashed completely. Then it started getting worse.

At one point, the the power button stopped responding. After reassembly: “Input Module Connector Board not detected”, then “Input Modules not detected”. This was a blessing in disguise because it forced me to debug properly.

Diagnosis:

  • The cable labelled (1) was loose at the OTHER end. Not the one you put in when building the laptop, but the other one. It’s a ZIF so when fixing google first on how to open them because it’s very delicate and you can damage it. There is a lever and press mechanism in ZIFs.

Stripes went away once those were seated. The tilted connector was probably pushing on the display cable next to it.
