Bios and drivers all up-to-date and from official Framework packages
Yesterday I’ve opened an anime episode in MPC HC and suddenly I hear the “disconnect” sounds in Windows, the display connected to my GPU (via the port on GPU) frozen, and all windows moved to laptop display. I restarted the computer but that didn’t help. The GPU is no longer recognized by Task Manager performance tab (my system is in Polish):
Rough translation:
(on left): “Windows successfully turned on this device, but despite this, the device is still not working properly.”
(on right): “AMD software detected that the graphics driver failed to load correctly on your system. A bug report has been generated and you can send it to AMD to help us improve our software. Would you like to report this issue?”
Is this really just driver/software problem or should I start saving for new GPU? Oh, the display and cable is ok, they work with different port on F16 and int graphics just fine.
What should I do?
I’d probably start by researching whether there is a FW driver pack for this laptop. A drivers reinstall would be good to rule out - sometimes Windows gets itself into a pickle.
Hi! With your advice I uninstalled the drivers with DDU and installed the drivers again from the newest drivers package from Framework. GPU is recognized and enabled! The only problem that remains is GPU now doesn’t connect to my display monitor via back usb-c (connects alright if I use one of the port on the side of laptop). Can I do anything with that?
Is there any evidence from Device Manager that the GPU is detecting the monitor when plugged into this port? Does the monitor respond in any fashion e.g. by waking from standby?
There is only integrated monitor which is probably the laptop’s one. No other monitors, but when I plug/unplug the monitor with back port, the Device Manager refreshes itself? There is also no “unknown devices” present. There is no “connected” sound and monitor is not waking up from standby.
Does the monitor need to have a connection type set? I have seen cases where a monitor is plugged in via USB C, but it doesn’t operate because it is set to HDMI or DVI. If it has an Auto mode, that is often good.
It has auto mode enabled. It’s ok with connecting to side ports. My model is AOC 2269W. It worked with GPU back port for two years till yesterday, so unless something changed overnight, should be ok. If that’s important, I’m connecting with USB C - HDMI cable.
Ah, could you expand on that? I think the normal advice here is that those are two separate things: one is either connecting with USB C (with that connector on both ends) or one is connecting via HDMI (ditto).
Your phrasing makes me wonder if you have a USB C connector on the laptop/GPU side, and an HDMI connector on the other end of the cable. If that is what you have, something in one of those connectors (likely the HMDI) is doing the conversion.
Could you expand on this a little? I don’t know if I am the right person to advise, but at least it will set out more detail for an expert to wade in.
