[GUIDE] Successful Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) on Framework 13 AMD with Qualcomm QCNCM865 and Arch Linux

Trying this Wi-Fi card out with my Framework 13 AMD 7840. Everything seems to mostly work out of the box with kernel 7.1.2. The only annoyance I am experiencing is that it takes a solid 10 seconds every time to reconnect to Wi-Fi after resuming from suspend… I am not really sure yet what this is about.

Well I got one of them because I read that it has better analog bits than the ax210 that would make it cope with weak signals and the bad antennas in the 13 better. While I have not had any functional issues with it (connects fast, bt seems to work fine, comes back from sleep/hibernate fine) the performance has been a bit of a disapointment (especially for someone that only has wifi6 APs).

Vs the ax210:

  • Increased my standardized min idle power (with iw powersave on) from 3.17 to 3.63
  • Reports significantly better signal quality at all my test locations (6-10dBm better)
  • Somehow still performs worse to about equal to the ax210 at all test locations which in turn performs much worse than the ax210 in an x270 that apparently has a much better antenna setup.

I guess back to the ax210 for me and hope the pro lid actually has better antennas.

Running the ai-300 on fully up-to-date cachyos.

I just made the swap to the QCNCM865, because the RZ717 simply refused to work when connected to the Cisco meraki access points at a local cafe. The RZ717 generally worked fine enough with other access points, but specifically with the Meraki something like 90% of pings to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 would completely time out, where the same pings run from my phone connected to the same wifi were 8-20ms.

Swapped in the QCNCM865 and the connection to the Meraki AP is rock solid, and I even picked up a couple 100Mbit of extra speed when at my desk at home (running a unifi express 7). Didn’t compile anything, just using the linux-firmware-atheros provided by CachyOS.

Only downside I see so far is the same high latency to make the first connection after a resume from suspend that @kirelagin mentioned earlier in this thread.

By the way, for anyone wondering, this reconnection after a resume situation is really, really annoying. I got fed up with it relatively quickly and went back to Intel.

I did not try digging into this, but I did not see anything obviously wrong on the software side. So I wonder if this is something that could be fixed at some point in new kernel versions or if this hardware is a lost cause entirely.

I did actually test that when I tried it briefly and it worked just fine, maybe something up without your ap it doesn’t like?

Mainly switched back to the ax210 cause it wasn’t actually any better at ax than the ax210 with all the issues reported here I was pleasantly surprised how everything I tested worked out of the box.

I also switched back from the NCM865, on Linux it refuses to use 160MHz BW on 5GHz and on Windows (that I need to use from time to time) I had no 6GHz.
so, I’m back on the stock MediaTek as it seems to be working on both without issue.

I even tried buying Gigabyte WiFi7 card and taking the module from it, suspecting that the issue was my eBay grey market card, but it wasn’t
