in DOS and Win, there was a way to tell it, next time boot from here.
how can I do that now? Win10?

You can go into the BIOS (F2 at startup) and change the boot order or I believe it is F12? to select which device to boot from after POST.

I tried that, did not work on F 12" Win10, or F 16" Win 11, to attempt to boot from USB, both systems boot from c: drive to Win log in screen..

Try pressing F2 multiple times upon startup. The window to tell the system to go into the BIOS instead of following its boot order is quite short. Keep rebooting until successful.

I get into BIOS, I tell it to boot from USB, and it doesnt. that does Not work!!

The BIOS order has to be changed to boot from it and whatever is being done is not correct. Not going to go into the specifics of how to do this. I have tested this out on the Framework Laptop 16 I am typing this on.

Use the F12 Key instead upon power up then select the USB to boot from. Lookup some YouTube videos if this is not clear on what to do.

Another approach would be to buy an external NVME enclosure, remove the drive from the laptop, boot from the USB and copy the files over.

If a graphical interface is desired, creating an Ubuntu USB and doing the Live option will boot into a full OS where the files can be copied from the external NVME drive to a flash drive.

This is another reminder as to why backups of computers are useful to restore the system to a working state.
