I'm having thermal throttling from a board sensor 🤷🏻‍♂️

I started playing a new massive update for Scrap Mechanic and after some time play (about 40 minutes) the FPS drops from ~140 to a stuttery ~58 FPS and stuttery audio. I looked at HWiNFO and Steam performance metrics and it appears that during the issue I’m getting CPU and GPU throttling from a board sensor. The die temps for the CPU and GPU are both well under thermal throttling so I don’t get why I’m having this issue now. I haven’t tested other games yet but once the throttling starts it goes on for like 10 minutes and then stops for 5 minutes and repeats.

I’ve never had this issue before and I’m really confused why it’s happening now. I’ve played many other games that are even more demanding on both CPU and GPU.

My system:

  • Windows 11 25H2
  • R7 7840HS
  • RTX 5070
  • 32GB RAM
  • 240W FW Charger

The CPU core temperatures are very close to each other so I don’t think the thermal paste has degraded. Some people commented (on other topics) that clogged fan vents may trigger thermal throttling even if the temperature is below the limit.

I keep the vents and fans very clean and I typically have it propped up on a laptop stand so there aren’t any airflow restrictions. I’m one of the users that did the PTM7950 sandwich mod too. I have noticed that even with the FW 240W charger the battery still drains of the GPU and CPU are under heavy load. I think what might be happening is that the battery drains a little (I see the issue happening around 95%) and then the system throttles to keep it from draining more. I’m not sure why something like this was never an issue with my 180W charger. I think it’s a firmware thing idk.

However that’s not thermal throttling, if you can find the chip responsible for charging adding some thermal paste on them might work. Sorry I don’t know the exact details
