Introducing the Framework Laptop 12

The camera doesn’t need to point at the desk, it could stick out the side a bit and swivel.

I’m buying one with hopes that there will be a future mainboard to switch to AMD or even Qualcomm ICs. Intel 13th Gen is a good starting point (especially for Native Bluetooth), and it would be great to see support for Android / Chrome OS one day but I will be using Windows 11 initially.

With this sort of business model where longevity of the form factor is the main goal, are there going to be other innovations around the tablet usecase that could be explored further with new types of modules and/or mainboard? I would really like to see some focus on how to provide the best experience for education, business, and consumer (with recommended configurations for each).

The #1 problem that’s “emblematic of the problems with consumer electronics” is the LACK OF DEVICES WITH 4:3 SCREENS! You had a golden opportunity here and you pissed it away. The world does not need yet another 16:10 device.

Uhh ewww no. No one wants 4:3 screens. No one is looking at 35mm film (the original reason TVs were 4:3) on these.

I don’t think I’ll ever watch a movie on a framework 12 (some people might) so I might actually like a non 16:9 ratio. Aren’t iPad close to 4:3?

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I’m genuinely impressed by this convertible form factor and the modular design. As a minimalist and software engineer, it really checks all my boxes. I’m planning to dive into more hands-on reviews before making a decision. Can’t wait to see how it performs once it’s in the wild!

There are a couple of reviews live on the forum already. A few reviews elsewhere on the ‘net.

Even if 4:3 was actually desirable, that would either make the 12 taller than the 13 or get us a weird squished keyboard.

I have 2 HP x360s. I like them generally….well until they keyboards on both went wonky. That is why I got a FW 16, with which I can replace the keyboard in less that one minute WHILE it is running.
I have a planned large meeting out of town later this year, and just want a laptop with me, and not the FW 16 which I depend on very much. Just need something to use on lighter stuff.
Soooo, I ordered a replacement keyboard for the newer of the two HPs.
I had previously replace the HD with an SSD and replace the battery.
This time the keyboard. Being careful, it took several hours to replace that keyboard. It is not something for the light hearted; the keyboard is the FIRST part that goes into the assembly in the factory; and is underneath the motherboard. There are at least 3 different tiny screws to keep track of, and multiples of those.
Compare that to the FW 16’s replacement measured in seconds…with no tools.

I mean tbh having 4:3 phones has met my need for the aspect ratio everywhere but gaming, and there a crt will be better than a modern pannel anyways

Oled has crt beat in basically all aspects these days but yeah it took a long time. Luckily I never got too far down that rabbit-hole cause as good as they look the sound drives me crazy XD.

Not if you are using it for retro-gaming. dithering present in older titles only gets displayed properly on CRT. I am aware that adapters to mimic the effect exist, but the only one I have personally seen went for something like $200, and even as a retro-gaming enthusiast I haven’t been able to justify the cost. (yet)

That is a thing but I am not putting up with the beep for that. Also shaders for emulators and electronic post processing do exist.

Good crts tend to be quite expensive too (and a limited resource at this point) but if you have one might as well use it.

I never had any beep, a very light fuzz maybe but I remember loving it as a kid. I haven’t had a CRT since the 2010’s, I kept lucking into TV’s (I got a scepter for my 13th birthday and since then lucked into a 45” Roku, than a 50” samsung, and now a 120z 4k 65” samsung all free to me) but I do a lot of retro-console modding, and a solid CRT even on the wii tranaforms some titles and when I can justify the cost (maybe after my fw12 batch 8 payment processes) I want to get a device to mimic the dithering and properly upscale to my modern display, and finish modding some consoles to output in more translateabke resolutions. I need to get less exoensive hobbies :smiling_face_with_tear:

I may be a bat or something but I can still hear it (or at least could like 2 years ago, don’t see them that often these days). I guess in that way I can kind of empathize with the people that are sensitive to pwm or oled flicker.
