Introducing the Framework Laptop 12

the thing is, they also need to expand their customer base. upgraded parts like those aren’t going to substantially increase new buyers the way reaching into new niches will.

they’re also not mutually exclusive actions.

There are two problems with that

  1. Either Framework is a “small company” and thus does not have the R&D spend for upgrades and NPI (seems accurate given the dearth of upgrades beyond motherboards announced) making upgrades vs NPI mutually exclusive. Alternatively, Framework isn’t small and could pursue both but chooses not to, which seems unlikely.

  2. That kind of growth mindset is exactly what leads to enshitification. If Framework “must” expand into new categories to stay profitable, then this entire effort is pointless because it leads to exploiting the customer base for every last dollar. I’ll pass on that. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, in that scenario, I’d rather buy some HP/Dell/Whatever untainted by the base alloy of hypocrisy.

… they’ve literally been doing upgrades, though. like, that’s been happening recently, and some of them were announced in the same event as the 12, with implications more were on the way.

so i genuinely cannot tell where the problem is that you’re pointing at. is it that there are any new products at all, instead of only upgrades? because they are still a business trying to get less small, and that comes back to “they need more customers”. you can’t grow the ability to do more by primarily selling incremental upgrades to a subset of your established customers (since not all of them will buy every one).

I have a problem with new products and the money invested in developing them instead of fixing the issues with existing products. Primarily firmware/BIOS updates. As soon as my FW13 sells I won’t have any dog in the fight and I’ll likely never be seen on this forum again. Also what upgrades beyond motherboards were announced?

Updated components for the 13" that I can think of since the initial launch:

  • hinges (x2)
  • top cover
  • webcam
  • display
  • additional bezels
  • speakers
  • upgraded and additional expansion cards
  • keyboard v2 (coming)
  • motherboards (as you note)

If you are referencing the recent v2 presentation, I believe that you are correct that the only new items announced for the 13" were motherboards.

Can we get another 2.8k display without rounded corners?

I was specifically referencing the gen 2 announcement, yes. I am well aware of the other upgrades. I referenced them in a previous comment.

I had missed that. Good luck with whatever you wind up using next, we will miss you around these parts when you are gone.

the R&D cost for such a small change isn’t worth it.

I second this.

I don’t necessarily need it to be Wacom EMR, but I want it to be good enough for drawing, so if they can manage to get the USI protocol to produce minimal line wobble with decent latency I’d still pick one up.

Is there going to be support for AMD? ie) strix point?

This is meant to be a “entry-level” 2in1 so to speaks. Hence the older intel gen base, to get the price down.

So I would guess there will be no AMD version atleast not in the near timeframe

Strix point is too high wattage for the cooling system iirc. It just wouldn’t perform well under any load.

Well, my solution can be the redneck engineering solution. Just stick a 2280 in there and have it overhanging over the battery.

Edit: This is half joking. I know it’s bad to put a component directly touching the battery, but if someone decides to tell me why not to do this, please give me something more than that because I could put a spacer or something to properly protect the battery.

For all the people debating the not-yet-announced price, don’t get mixed up in the price of a prebuilt with Windows and the DIY.

For example, around $750 is a barebones DIY AMD 7040 with no RAM or storage. More realistically the price of third-party RAM and storage along with expansion cards brings that to around $950-$1050

Back when the price started at $780, I got a FW13 7640u for $930. It is possible to do cheaper but may not be worth it.

I’d assume there’s simply not enough vertical space between the battery and the input cover. Because if there were, Framework would’ve either made the battery thicker or the laptop thinner.

I’d think that there might be enough room if I filed down the inside of the case a little.

Thats my point.
