I love framework’s vision and i love almost everything about the laptop 12.
Ive wanted to switch to linux for a long time but I need my laptop to be a 2-in-1 to write while giving physics classes, I thought linux was not compatible with that when I bought my surface pro, but windows SUCKS.
So I’m very frustrated by the screen quality, because if it was better the laptop 12 would be perfect, It would really help me if some users of the 12 could give me some feedback about the screen.
Has its quality had any noticeable impact on your experience ?
I know it’s easier said than done, but please framework give us a better display, I would be happy to pay more I really want to support ownership.
Yes, the display is quite bad in terms of colour reproduction on the red side. Installing a colour profile does make it considerably better but it obviously can’t help with the colours the display can’t reproduce. For note taking, computation, and document writing it’s completely acceptable but for any photographic or drawing where realistic colours play a role, the display wouldn’t be acceptable for me. Activating “redshift” for more red colours in the evening plays to the prime weaknesses of the display, so you may not want to use that even if you do on other monitors.
When I was looking around for linux 2-in-1 laptops that support a stylus, the FW12 came up as a prime option and I have been quite happy with the stylus precision and support (way better than the Surface Pro 7 I was using before)
The screen is pretty bad. Especially reds, which look a bit orange. Okay, a lot orange.
Having said that, I’ve used mine every day since it came out. It’s fine. I’ve even edited a handful of photos. As long as I’m just doing basic white balance, exposure, contrast, etc., it’s fine. I wouldn’t try to do color correction of a picture based on the FW 12 display, but otherwise, whatever.
I do word processing stuff, a little bit of drawing, play some simple games, web browsing, even media consumption. Despite the “inaccurate” display, even things like movies and such generally look fine. The brightness and contrast are pretty good, so it really doesn’t bother me in normal use. Again, the main thing I notices is when there is something that is supposed to be a certain color of red, and I KNOW what color of red it should be, it will be obvious that it is more orange than it should be.
Would I be VERY interested if/when Framework introduces a more accurate display? Absolutely! But is it fine for daily use right now? For me, yes.
Let me say this. I had a Surface pro. The display was amazing. After getting my FW 12, I sold the Surface pro.
I just remembered, I even use it as a remote monitor when I’m recording videos. I have it hooked up to my camera to provide a large display where I can judge framing and focus, and keep an eye on what’s going on. Again, I just don’t use it to ensure I got my color set correctly. I do that on the smaller, more accurate display on the camera. Once that’s done, I can use the large display on the FW 12 to judge framing, focus, and even exposure.
The color grading seems to be the biggest issue you encountered, while It’s not great it would not be terrible either for me, I’m a bit colorblind especially for red so i can consider myself lucky i guess, and even if I see it, it’s just not that big of a deal for my use.
I am happy to see that the big bezels and the screen reflection doesnt seem to bother you that much (correct me if it’s still annoying).
The FW12 is looking more and more like the best choice for me.
For me, large bezels are one of the most overblown things these days. I don’t know why people are so hung up on it. I suppose it makes sense that you’d want the display to be as large as possible within a given device size, but just being annoyed at the look of bezels is something that doesn’t compute for me. If someone is, that’s totally fair. Everyone has their own opinions and preferences, that’s fine. But I don’t think I would ever say I had an issue with a device because of bezel size. In fact, with a touch screen device, having a bit of extra real estate where nothing will happen if you touch is kind of nice.
I do prefer a matte display. Especially outside or with bright windows behind me, the glare on the glossy screen is a bit annoying. I can totally live with it. Most touch-screen devices these days tend to be glossy. But I did install a matte screen protector on my FW 12, and I like it. It cuts down on glare and makes fingerprints less obvious. I got mine from Viascreens. I’m sure there are others available for the FW 12 by now.
thanks, you will definitely see me again around here in some time (when i get FW12) since I barely know anything about linux (my only experience is trying some distros on a VM one time).
I’m happy to see that framework has the cool and active community it deserves.
Does any of that require a colour-graded screen? I should think most people’s usages of laptop computers do not, and in any case, folks doing things like photo retouching are not likely to want to work on such a small screen.
Yeah it’s obnoxiously bad. I would say that in spite of it being bad I don’t really notice or care when I’m watching content.
I only really notice when I’m painting because colors are straight up missing from the color wheel. (mostly red). The display is also extremely washed out and dull.
I’m only aware that there is an issue with the display because I read about it on these forums.
I’ve had my FW12 for about a year and use it all the time in laptop and tablet mode. I’ve never noticed anything wrong with the display.
Agree with everyone. The display is objectively bad - compared to what you get with other recent devices (OLED or good LCD screens). In reality it can still be very subjective and depends on your expectations.
For use cases where color accuracy is important, or if you just can’t tolerate a below average color experience then it might be an issue. For everyday browsing and consuming some content it does its job well enough.
Personally I do hope for a better, upgradeable screen in the future. For now it’s good enough for what I’m doing and I prefer the form factor and it’s other features to alternative products.
Depends on your use case. If you’re doing color accurate work, maybe you want something else. Then again if you’re doing detailed/color accurate work you’ll maybe want it connected to a calibrated large screen monitor.
For everything else the display is just fine.
I ran Windows 11/Lightroom on my my FW12 and did a fair bit of image editing with no problem on the FW12 screen. If I needed more color accuracy I connected the FW12 to a large monitor.
Something to keep in mind. If you’re doing art work for display on the web, it will be seen on 1000’s of monitors/screens of different quality/calibration. So what you’re working on may not matter much. YMMV.
Besides the bad color accuracy that makes reds look too orange and purples look too blue, I think the screen looks fine. Overall, I think the visual clarity and response time appears quite good with no visible ghosting to my eye when scrolling through webpages.
Out of the box the screen has a cool and greenish tone but BigT’s custom icc profiles fixes that. I also applied a matte screen protector since I don’t like the glossy finish.
For the next screen upgrade I hope we get a screen with 100% sRGB, larger size to fill out the bezels, and a resolution of 2880x1800. I’m currently using the screen with scaling at 133%, but I would love a higher res screen that looks good at 200% scaling to avoid the fractional scaling issues with some games and apps in Gnome Wayland.
I’ve been using the Framework for a little over a month now, I sold my iPad Pro 11 inch (1st gen!) to help this along.
So of course coming from Apple, the display has been a huge downgrade, and it’s still worse than both of my desktop monitors. But almost all of where it’s “bad” is the poor color reproduction, and, subjectively, the kinda chonky bezels.
Just for fun, I messed around in gimp and stretched out the display to reduce the bezels and change it to a 3:2 aspect ratio. This would probably be my top wishlist item, since we already are getting more powerful processors soon.
Other than that; it’s been fine for light gaming, the display response time is fine; there’s no real artifacting that degrades my enjoyment of youtube video watching or even some movies/TV shows; and the viewing angles are just fine, which makes using it as a PDF viewer for my Pathfinder 1st edition character sheet work quite well!
So, like, it’s noticeably bad, but depending on your use case, it’s totally tolerable. It really is just the color reproduction that doesn’t work out so well.
