I bought the second gen since my warranty was expired. It seems to be slightly different or slightly revised over the first gen. Typing on it feels slightly less clacky over the first gen. And the little pull tabs were reversed so the adhesive wouldn’t peel up. I ordered it May 2nd so it’s likely not enough time to see any degradation. There’s no certain way to tell if they’ve changed the structure of the membrane unless I disassemble it, but that’s a permanent thing to do.

I didn’t know what you were talking about at first, but I looked and they indeed look different:
I encountered the same problem and was about to submit a support case, just as I came across this thread!
I nevertheless submitted a support case now, but I’m a bit worrying, as I received my keyboard (which was a replacement) ~10 months ago…
The original keyboard had the paint come off of the “S” key…
I’ve got a replacement keyboard (Gen. 1) on warranty end of January this year (2026), so just 8 months now. It starts failing again, this time the “cursor up” key ![]()
Is the Gen. 2 any better? @catastrophic
DUDE YES! This same thing has happened to me twice now (I bought a new second one and it now has the same problem). The D key is out on both of them. But I feel like on the first keyboard a second key went out as well, either W, A, S, or Spacebar. The D key starts going out first every time. I personally think it’s the rubber spacer circle things underneath the keyboard that has something to do with it. It’s because they’ve melted, slid around, or just straight up fell out when I’ve opened up my laptop a couple times to replace other parts that have gone bad. I’m really unhappy with framework and will never buy from them again. I just have to get through my last 2 years of college with this Framework 16 and I’m buying a $250 burner Lenovo for travel and going to build a desktop. Modularity and easy teardown / repairs is such an awesome concept. However my computer would’ve been junk within the first year had I not been able to keep replacing things. The laptop at its best is a beast that outperformed all of my friends custom built gaming desktops. But there are just so many things that have gone wrong for me to justify buying again.
Gen. 2 has no hardware changes I thought? Isn’t it just sold with the updated firmware that is the only difference, you can just update the firmware yourself and it still has the same problem.
That’s why I’m asking for official statement. The product page says “only software is new”, but at least the pull tabs have been altered, as can be seen here in the thread. So maybe something has been done to the membrane, too?
There are most likely some small, undisclosed changes, but I wouldn’t count on this issue being alleviated like that.
The “d” key suffers the most because it’s directly over the voltage controllers, which get exceptionally hot. With the added spacer that is there to prevent keyboard flex, much of that heat travels to the keyboard.
Please file a ticket with support so they can investigate. Thanks!
Will do as soon as the fault occurs reliably. Currently, the key is working again.
This doesn’t answer the question if the durability of the switches has been addressed in Gen. 2, though. This may be as subtle as changing some material properties, so not easy to spot.
I’m out of warranty, although the defective keyboard module was replaced just 10 months ago…
