Keyboard woes

I use rarely the keyboard, the laptop is normally docked away, with OcuLink external GPU and stuff.

I noticed that the keyboard has started to give issues, perhaps due lack of use. I have to sometimes really bang the keys to get a character.

So, any ideas for curing it? Bath in contact spray maybe?

This should not happen though, sounds to me that the contacts in keys are not gold plated. I mean, this is a very expensive laptop. should not be crap like this.

I would be inclined to open the laptop up and see if the ribbon connector needs to be reseated.

How old is the laptop?

pretty sure its not the “cable”, I gather the keyboard connects via serial-type interface. So there is no ribbon connector in FW 16, its connected via gold plated pads.

Device itself maybe 2 years max.

Gotcha. Does that clip out? If so, give it a spray with a compressed-air duster, and see if that helps. Of course, your device should be user-serviceable: although I would expect a keyboard to last longer than two years, it should be trivial to obtain a new one.

What’s your warranty length? Some (Spain I think) are three years, but otherwise they’re one (US) and two (UK and Europe). Not sure about other territories, but it’s worth a check.

As I said, its practically new…

Perhaps you weren’t using it enough, and it went rusty!

Indeed! but that should no happen. I’d expect it in $200 china crap, not in $4000 pro gear.

Any specific keys that stopped working?

In my case holding the laptop upside down and mashing the offending keys for a minute or two helped.

Doesn’t mitigate the issue long term, though.

Compal - Framework’s keyboard supplier - didn’t do a great job with regards to durability of these devices.

Not really specific keys.
Compal - so we have a name. My guess is that the key contacts are not gold plated inside.

But I think I need to take the thing out - so dunno - flush with contact spray, and clickety click with all the keys???

Somehow the discontinued one-key module was made by Lite-On.

You might flush in dust or other debris in between the contacts, so do at your own risk.

They’re most certainly not gold-plated - they’re bog standard traces as usee in any membeane keyboard.
